Today, Guilford observes both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day. Have you ever wondered how these two observances came to share the same day?

Columbus Day has a long history in the United States, including its significance to Italian American heritage. Indigenous Peoples Day recognizes the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples while providing an opportunity to learn about the lasting effects of colonization.

Understanding the history behind both observances helps us better understand why communities recognize them and the different experiences and perspectives that shape our shared history.

Curious to learn more? Smithsonian Magazine explores the evolution of Columbus Day and the movement toward recognizing Indigenous peoples. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/evolution-columbus-day-celebrations-italian-immigrant-pride-indigenous-recognition-180960736/

The Guilford Human Rights Commission encourages our community to keep learning, asking questions, and exploring history from multiple perspectives.
