Introducing Learning Moment!

A new series from the Education & Outreach Division built for line officers. Every installment breaks down one piece of who we are as an Order: our symbols, our history, our obligations in two minutes or less.

No lecture, no lodge meeting required. Just the kind of grounding every officer should carry into the field.

Lesson One: The FOP Star.

The five-pointed star every member wears isn’t decoration. It’s a reminder of duty, worn three ways: as a citizen, as an officer, and as a lodge member.

The gold points mark the position of trust we currently serve under. The blue field between the points and the center is the thin blue line. Our pledge to protect those we serve. The white background stands for the purity of that service: nothing corrupt gets injected into our Order.

The open eye is vigilance, watching for danger whether the people in our care are awake or asleep.

The clasped hands are friendship, always extended to a brother or sister in need. And the circle running through it all represents our unending work to advance this Order.

This is all bound together under our motto, Jus, Fidus, Libertatum: “Law Is a Safeguard of Freedom.”

It’s a small piece of metal that carries a big responsibility.

Know what you’re wearing.

Law enforcement service is rarely carried by one person alone. Families, especially children, share in the challenges, sacrifices, and proud moments that come with the profession. This month, we celebrate and honor them.

The National Fraternal Order of Police is proud to partner with Gratitude Initiative and fellow law enforcement organizations for the inaugural Law Enforcement Child Month, recognizing and honoring the children and families who serve alongside our nation's law enforcement officers every day.
