Yesterday, we celebrated the official ribbon-cutting of our new Fire Training Facility - an incredible milestone for our community and our firefighters. This facility represents a major investment in safety, readiness, and the ongoing professional development of the men and women who protect Gulf Shores every day.
During the event, guests watched live demonstrations including a technical rescue, vehicle extrication, and a burn scenario - each one showcasing the skill, dedication, and teamwork our firefighters rely on during real emergencies. These demonstrations reflect the skills our crews will sharpen inside this facility for years to come.
Afterward, attendees explored each training structure that will allow our crews to train in realistic, controlled environments that mirror the challenges they face in the field. From live‑fire conditions to high‑rise operations, confined‑space navigation, and trench rescue scenarios, this facility ensures our firefighters have the tools they need to stay sharp, adapt quickly, and serve our community with excellence.
Below is some information on the specialized training structures now shaping the future of Gulf Shores Fire Rescue:
🔥 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴
Built by our own Gulf Shores Fire Rescue firefighters using seven shipping containers, this two‑story structure is designed around the Fire Department Training Network (FDTN) “Double T” burn room concept. High‑temperature insulation allows for realistic, repeatable live‑fire scenarios while protecting the building’s integrity.
Key Features:
• Two live‑fire burn rooms
• Reconfigurable sliding doors
• Interior and exterior stairways
• Removable Denver Drill prop
• Dedicated fire and temperature‑control room
• Multiple layouts for realistic residential fire conditions
🔥 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿
Our four‑story tower, constructed from 12 shipping containers and providing over 3,800 sq ft of enclosed training space, replicates a wide variety of structures found throughout our community. Each floor is designed to challenge crews in different real‑world scenarios.
Floor Highlights:
• First Floor: Modern residential layout with movable walls and forcible‑entry doors/windows
• Second Floor: Elevated homes and apartment-style access
• Third Floor: Hotel/apartment hallways, breach wall with removable studs, balcony
• Fourth Floor: Beachfront condo configuration with an open balcony
• Roof: Technical rescue deck with rope anchors, confined-space hatch, and a 1,000‑lb crane
Additional features include interior and exterior stairwells, a standpipe system for hose advancement practice, and wide exterior stairs for JTA drills.
🔥 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗕𝗼𝘅
Designed with Division Chief Scott Carmichael (Mobile Fire‑Rescue) and our own firefighters, this L‑shaped, four‑container configuration creates two trench widths for hands‑on trench‑collapse and technical rescue training. Tires along the container walls simulate unstable soil and void spaces.
Planned Enhancements:
• Decked work surface for safer operations
• Expanded instructional area for larger training groups
This structure offers realistic training in trench rescue operations, shoring, stabilization, and patient access.
🔥 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘇𝗲
Built inside a single 40‑ft shipping container, this three‑level maze pushes firefighters to navigate tight, challenging spaces in full PPE and respiratory protection.
Training Elements:
• Three levels
• Entanglement area
• Elevated pipe
• Moveable floor
• Tight turns and restricted passages
• Multiple navigation challenges
It strengthens communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork during confined‑space operations.
