🚁🇺🇸 Rescue 5 at Leakesville Elementary’s Mississippi Day!

Rescue 5 was excited to join Mississippi Day at Leakesville Elementary! 💙💛 We loved the opportunity to bring the helicopter out, show off our aircraft, and give students a closer look at what we do as a helicopter EMS crew.

It’s always a great day when we get to connect with our community, spark curiosity, and maybe even inspire a future flight nurse, paramedic, pilot, or first responder! 🚁🩺

A big THANK YOU to Leakesville Elementary for inviting us to be part of such a fun and educational day. We’re proud to serve our Mississippi communities both in the air and on the ground!

🚁❤️ Happy ER Nurses Week! ❤️🚁

From your friends in the helicopter EMS world, THANK YOU to all the emergency department nurses who show up, step up, and give it their all when the pressure is on!

You’re often the first familiar face our patients see after a flight, and we know the work doesn’t stop when the stretcher rolls through your doors. From quick handoffs and critical updates to the teamwork that keeps patient care moving, we’re grateful for the skill, compassion, and dedication you bring to every shift.

We may arrive by air, but we’re all working toward the same mission: giving our patients the best chance at a better outcome. 🚁🏥

To the ER nurses who meet us at the bedside, anticipate what our patients need, and keep fighting for them long after we take off — we see you, we appreciate you, and we’re thankful to be part of the same team.

Happy ER Nurses Week from your friends at Rescue 5! Thank you for all you do, on the good days, the hard days, and every chaotic shift in between. 💙

As Hurricane Isaias (no, we can’t pronounce it correctly either) prepares to make landfall, likely east of us 🙏, please keep in mind simple hurricane etiquette. 🌀

When Mother Nature starts throwing furniture:

✅ DO:

👵🏻 Check on your neighbors. A quick text can go a long way!
🪟 Stay inside and away from windows.
📱 Keep your phone charged and your weather alerts on.
🚒 Be patient with emergency responders. They’re dealing with the same storm you are!
🐶 Keep your pets close and indoors.
⚒️ Help others when it’s safe to do so.
🚨 Give linemen, first responders, and utility crews room to work.
🛸 Remember that if the power goes out, your entire neighborhood probably isn’t part of a conspiracy.
🦷 Make sure you’re wearing appropriate undergarments, teeth, shoes, and clothes in general before agreeing to a news interview 👀

❌ DON’T:

🚙 Don’t go joyriding to see how bad the flooding is. You are not a storm chaser, and your Ford Focus is not amphibious.
🛑 Don’t drive around barricades. They’re there for a reason, not a suggestion.
⚡️Don’t stand outside filming lightning, flying debris, or trees falling. This is not your chance to go viral.
🗑️Don’t go outside to retrieve your trash can in 60 mph winds. It belongs to nature now.
📺 Don’t call 911 because your cable went out or your favorite show stopped streaming.
☠️ Don’t run a generator in your garage, even with the door open. Carbon monoxide can kill!
🌊 Don’t go sightseeing in floodwaters or drive through standing water. Turn around, don’t drown!
🛟 Don’t be the person who needs rescuing because you just HAD to see what the storm looked like.
⛈️ Don’t spread unverified rumors on social media. We encourage you to follow reputable sources, not your cousin’s uncle that is actually a mechanic, not a meteorologist.

🚨 THE GOLDEN RULE: If the words “hold my b**r. Watch this!” cross your mind, don’t do it! 🙅❌

We love a little Gulf Coast toughness, but there’s a difference between being tough and being the reason dispatch has to say, “You did WHAT?!” 🤯

In all seriousness, the weather during this season shouldn’t be taken lightly. Rescue 5 is standing by during the inclement weather, ready to serve our community however we can! 🚁

🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, IAN! 🎉

Today we’re celebrating our boss, flight paramedic, firefighter, paper nurse (😉), SWAT team member, and—most importantly—someone who always takes care of his people. 🚁🩺🔥

Ian wears a lot of hats, and somehow manages to pull off every single one. He’s the kind of person who always has his team’s back.

We’re lucky to have a boss who leads by example, looks out for his people, and isn’t afraid to jump in when the going gets tough.

Help us wish Ian a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎂🥳

Here’s to another year of keeping everyone safe, solving problems, and somehow being involved in just about everything. 😂

We’re sorry you probably have to spend your birthday hurricane prepping, but we’d gladly celebrate with a hurricane porch party later! 🎉

🚁 CREW MEMBER MONDAY: JACOB AKA PNUT! 🚁

Facebook, meet flight paramedic, Jacob. He grew up as a military brat, spending time in California, Texas, New Mexico, and Panama before eventually settling here in Mississippi. He also brings 24 years of experience with the Gulfport Fire Department, along with time at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

When he’s not working, you’ll probably find him at Dewey Dew Bugz in D’Iberville, getting in a good CrossFit workout, or spending time in the woods during hunting season.

Here are a few more things you should know about him:

⚠️ If he came with a warning label, it'd say: Overthinker
🎄 His Christmas tree rule: The tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving. No sooner, no later.
🚪 Stuck in a grocery store, here's his strategy: Claim the aisle closest to the door so you can leave as soon as possible.
🧙‍♂️ Fictional best friend: Samwise Gamgee
🏹 Most “Pnut” purchase he's made: Sitka hunting apparel
🎤 His go to karaoke song: *Iris* by the Goo Goo Dolls, although he says he would never actually sing it in public
🌤️ Personality forecast: Patchy fog early, followed by sunny and calm skies
💪 Strangest compliment he's received: “Nice calves.” (IYKYK)
🦌 What would confuse people about his camera roll: Mostly pictures from a deer stand
📶 His biggest minor inconvenience: Slow internet
🎬 Actor who would play him: Channing Tatum, apparently
🏝️ Reality show he’d win: Survivor
📖 Autobiography title: "The Quiet Tracker: Family, Duty, and the Great Outdoors"
👍 He instantly likes someone who: Has good posture
🍕 Controversial food opinion: There’s no such thing as bad pizza
🐈 He thinks the rudest animal: Cats, without a doubt
🚽 Conspiracy theory he'd invent: Toilet seats were created to make couples argue
🦆 Would he rather fight one horse sized duck, or one hundred duck sized horses: He’ll take his chances with one horse-sized duck
🎶 His life theme song: "Humble and Kind" by Tim McGraw
🧊 Unofficial award he'd receive: "Snack Search Leader" for opening the refrigerator repeatedly to see if new food has magically appeared
💬 Best advice he's received: Appreciate how far you’ve come and keep going. Be kind and stay humble.
🥳 Workplace holiday he'd institute: "Say Something Nice Day" on September 1, complete with shout-outs, food, and drinks
🎵 Walk-up song: "No L’s" by Forrest Frank

His ideal 10-year outlook is simple: to have treated people kindly along the way. That says a lot about the person behind the firefighter, hunter, CrossFit athlete, and professional refrigerator checker.

You can't *physically* say "hi" to Jacob until next week... he and his family are currently living out everyone's fall, spooky dreams in Salem, MA. Fingers crossed he brings us back souvenirs! 👻

🎉 Belated Birthday Shoutout to pilot Jeremy! 🎉

We may be a little late… but we’re pretty sure Jeremy was too busy scrolling Facebook Reels and adding “just one more thing” to his Temu cart to notice. 😂📱📦

Help us wish our pilot, Jeremy, a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🥳🚁

Here’s to another year of safe flights, smooth landings, endless Reels, and questionable-but-absolutely-necessary Temu purchases!

Happy Birthday, Jeremy! 🎂🚁🎉

🚁 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🫁⛰️

Ever wonder what happens to your lungs when you take a helicopter ride at altitude?

As altitude increases, barometric pressure decreases. That means there’s less oxygen pressure available for the lungs to move oxygen into the bloodstream—even though the percentage of oxygen in the air is still about 21%.

For critically ill patients who already have trouble oxygenating, that change matters. 🫁

That’s where ventilators come in. During HEMS transport, our crews carefully manage a patient’s oxygenation and ventilation while accounting for the changing environment. Ventilator settings and oxygen delivery may need to be adjusted based on the patient’s condition and the flight profile.

💨 The ventilators you see here are the two utilized by our company: the Revel (purple) and the Hamilton T1 (red/gray).

And there’s another consideration: gas expands as atmospheric pressure decreases. That means air trapped in the body—such as in certain lung injuries—can expand during ascent. 🚁

So while the cabin may feel perfectly normal to us, our flight crew and medical team are constantly thinking about how altitude, pressure, oxygen, and the patient’s physiology interact.

At altitude, the atmosphere changes. Our approach to patient care has to account for it. 🚁🫁

🚁 ON THURSDAYS, WE’RE THANKFUL ❤️

Today, we’re thankful to be part of something bigger than our individual base or aircraft.

We’re proud to be part of Med-Trans, a national medical transport provider focused on building strong partnerships with health systems, medical centers, and EMS agencies to provide air medical transportation. Med-Trans is part of the Global Medical Response (GMR) family of solutions.

So, what does being part of the GMR family mean?

🌎 GMR has approximately 34,000 team members across its operations.
🚁 The organization operates more than 400 rotor-wing aircraft and more than 100 fixed-wing aircraft.
🚑 GMR also operates thousands of ground vehicles and has 899 air and ground locations and 47 communication centers.
❤️ Together, GMR’s teams support approximately 5.5 million patient encounters each year.

GMR brings together multiple EMS organizations, including Med-Trans, Air Evac Lifeteam, REACH Air Medical Services, Guardian Flight, AirMed International, and American Medical Response. 🚁 🚑 📞

But behind all those numbers are people—pilots, flight nurses, paramedics, mechanics, dispatchers, clinicians, communications specialists, and countless support team members working every day to make patient care possible.

Today, we’re thankful for the opportunity to wear the Med-Trans name, be part of the GMR family, and serve the communities that trust us when they need help the most.

Different teams. Different communities. One mission: providing care when it matters most. 🚁❤️
