Join us for a special guided tour of the Ridgewood Historical Society’s (RHS) exhibition 250 Years of Progress: A Celebration of Our Nation’s Independence and Endurance.

This major exhibition in the Museum at the Schoolhouse traces our nation’s journey over the past 250 years from the Revolution to today—through triumphs, trials, and defining moments that shaped the American experience. Explore historic artifacts, remarkable innovations, and everyday inventions that reveal the nation’s enduring spirit and evolving promise of liberty and equality.

And, many of the artifacts have Bergen County connections, with artifacts from the Ackermans, Bantas, Bogerts, and many more Bergen County families.

Exhibition Curator Anthony Cavo will lead our tour, sharing stories about selected objects on display, identify artifacts related to Bergen County families, and discuss the inspiration behind the exhibition and his choices. Together, we’ll explore 250 years of American innovation and history, with a special focus on the local stories and connections represented in the collection.

RSVP as soon as possible. The guided tour is limited to 20 people!

Please Note:

GSBC members and their guests will receive priority for the 1 pm GSBC tour. (And if you are not yet a member, we hope you’ll consider joining us!)

GSBC Members and Guests = Free.

Non-members, and guests who are not attending with a GSBC member, will be notified if space becomes available for the 1pm tour or have the option to join a later tour that same day. We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to experience this excellent exhibition with its Curator and will strive to accommodate everyone. Suggested donation = $5 per person.

Join the Honorable Gregg A. Padovano and Honorable Menelaos W. Toskos for a fascinating virtual tour through the history of the Bergen County Courthouse and intriguing insights into its justice system.

Additionally, the Justices will cover the early history of the Bergen County Courts, including when Oakland (then known as the Ponds / Yawpough) served as the center of Bergen County justice during the American Revolution.

The Bergen County Courthouse built between 1910 and 1912, is an architectural and historical gem. A stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture, it features imposing Corinthian columns, intricate stonework, and a majestic dome topped. The Courthouse is one of Bergen County’ most recognizable landmarks.

Inside, the courthouse is adorned with historic murals and majestic architectural details depicting justice, law, and civic duty, adding to the Courthouse’s artistic and historical significance.

For over a century, the courthouse has been the center of justice in Bergen County, playing a key role in landmark cases and shaping New Jersey’s legal history. Due to its architectural beauty and cultural importance, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its legacy for future generations.

Don’t miss this opportunity to explore Bergen County’s rich legal history with esteemed members of the judiciary!

The Baylor Massacre unfolded on September 28th, 1778, in present‑day River Vale, when Colonel George Baylor’s 3rd Light Dragoons were caught in a stealth nighttime assault by British General Sir Charles “No Flint” Grey. Both armies were scattered across Bergen County as the British foraged for supplies, and Baylor’s men—quartered in local homes and barns—were tasked with scouting and harassing these forces. Grey, known for silent bayonet attacks, advanced under darkness and quickly overwhelmed the American sentries.
As the surviving dragoons retreated, they hastily buried their dead in nearby tanning vats before fleeing the area. By the end of the attack, at least 69 Americans were killed, wounded, or captured, while the British suffered only one casualty. In 1967, local residents alerted the County about the importance of the site, which was threatened by development. An archaeological dig uncovered the remains of six soldiers, who were discovered in those same abandoned vats near the Hackensack River, later confirmed as victims of the massacre. The site became a Bergen County park in 1972, preserving the memory of the men lost during the surprise raid.
The digitized 1968 report of the history of the site and the archaeological dig can be read on the Bergen250 website here:https://bergen250.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Baylor-Massacre-1968-Publication.pdf
