🎃 Every person’s support needs are different. 👻

Two people can have the same diagnosis and still need very different types—or amounts—of support.

One person may benefit from support with sensory regulation, while another may need additional support to stay safe in the community. Someone else may need support with communication, daily living skills, employment, relationships, or something entirely different.

A diagnosis is only one part of a person’s story.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to support. The best support recognizes the individual—their strengths, preferences, goals, and unique support needs.

💜 Support should reflect the person, not assumptions about their diagnosis.

At Optimal, we see you, we hear you, and what you say matters.

💚 Cerebral palsy is more than mobility.

Cerebral palsy is commonly associated with physical disability and differences in movement, muscle tone, and coordination. But every person with cerebral palsy is different.

For some individuals, cerebral palsy may also be accompanied by developmental or adaptive support needs that can affect communication, learning, self-care, daily routines, or participation in the community.

That’s why it’s important to look beyond the diagnosis and understand the whole person. Support needs can look different from one individual to another—and the right supports can help people participate, communicate, learn, and live meaningful lives.

If you or someone you support has cerebral palsy and may have developmental support needs, Maryland DDA services may be an option to explore.

Autism can look different. 💙

There is no single way to be autistic.

One person may use headphones to manage sensory input. Another may use a fidget to help with focus. Someone else may communicate differently, need more support with daily activities, or appear to need very little support in some areas.

Different does not mean less.

Every autistic person has their own strengths, preferences, communication style, and support needs. And those needs can change over time and in different environments.

For families of children with autism, it can be helpful to start thinking about the future early. Maryland DDA may be an important resource to explore, especially when a child has ongoing developmental and support needs.

📋 You can apply to DDA at any age.
📄 Documentation of a developmental disability is an important part of the process.
🌱 Planning early can give families more time to understand available supports.

Your child does not have to look like someone else's child to deserve support.

🧬 Fragile X Syndrome & DDA

A diagnosis can be an important part of understanding someone’s support needs—but families may still have questions about what comes next.

Fragile X syndrome can be associated with intellectual disability, developmental differences, learning differences, communication differences, and differences in everyday adaptive skills. Support needs can also change as a person moves from childhood into adolescence and adulthood.

That’s why it can be helpful to learn about Maryland DDA early.

📋 What should families know?

DDA serves both children and adults. You can apply at any age, and documentation of the developmental disability is an important part of the application process.

A diagnosis alone does not determine eligibility. DDA considers the person as a whole, including their developmental history, support needs, and how their disability affects everyday life.

Planning early can give families more time to understand their options and prepare for the future.

Have questions about the DDA application process or what documentation may be helpful?

Optimal’s October 2026 Employee Spotlight selection is Jena MacDonald.

Jena started as a Coordinator of Community Services in the Western Region with Optimal in September 2025. Jena received her bachelor’s degree in social work from Shippensburg University, where she played lacrosse. Prior to starting at Optimal, Jena held various teaching positions with Frederick County Public Schools. Jena loves being able to make deep connections with her participants and seeing them reach their goals. She also loves the support from her supervisor. Her biggest struggle is being based at home and not being able to see her coworkers in person.

Jena is a lifelong resident of Frederick County. She is married to Brandyn, and they have a two-year-old son, Kayden. They are currently living with Jena’s parents as they wait for construction to be complete on their new home.

When not at work, Jena keeps busy being a wife, mother, and coaching high school lacrosse. Brandyn coaches high school basketball. Jena and Kayden love attending the basketball games and cheering on Brandyn’s team. They also enjoy being outside and going to the park. They always try to make it down to Ocean City, MD every summer.

Thank you, Jena, for everything you do for Optimal and for the individuals we serve. Your dedication makes a meaningful difference every day.
