Come out and enjoy Idaho's Liberty Bell on tour in Hailey this afternoon.

***Idaho's Liberty Bell is Stopping in Hailey***
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2026, from 3:05-3:35pm, Idaho's Liberty Bell will be making a stop in the City of Hailey and will be placed at the northwest corner of Bullion and Main Streets. This is a great opportunity to come visit and see the Liberty Bell in person and partake in a portion of Idaho's America250 celebration. Our city's public schools have "early out" on Wednesday, so we are anticipating a large turnout in a limited amount of time. This area is also heavily traveled and there is limited parking, so we encourage you to bike, walk, or park your vehicle in parking lots off of River Street and walk in to the location of the Liberty Bell. We will have a large police presence to make sure visitors can enjoy visiting the bell, while also feeling safe near this busy intersection. We are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow afternoon for this special occasion.

The beauty of the last "official" day of Summer in the City of Hailey hit us hard this morning. But what a beautiful sunrise creeping in it was. The temps are getting a bit chillier, so remember to bundle up in the mornings and evenings.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF:

Twenty-five years ago, terrorist attacks on American soil took thousands of lives, injured many more, and changed the way we went about our daily lives in ways we could never have imagined.

I remember the morning of September 11, 2001, like it was yesterday. I was just finishing a graveyard shift at the Hailey Police Department, back when our offices were still at City Hall. Dayshift came in and told us that a plane had hit a building in New York City.

We turned on a small, old-school television we had in the office and watched as time seemed to stand still and the carnage unfolded before us. I hurried home, not really remembering much of the drive, even though it was a short trip from the office, and I was glued to my home television for several hours. Like many of you, I could not quite grasp what had occurred. Looking back, I was probably in shock.

As an American, a Navy veteran, and a police officer, I was frustrated, angry, and confused as to how this could happen to America—to my America—and to our citizens. I wanted revenge, and I wanted it now.

However, I soon realized that what I could contribute most was to continue keeping my own community as safe as possible and to try my best to be the calm in our residents' storms.

I also witnessed something in the days, weeks, months, and years that followed that I hope we never lose sight of; our nation's support for our military, police and fire services, and, perhaps even more importantly, for our fellow Americans and for one another, was at an all-time high.

I often wonder and hope that our incoming generation does not lose sight of what occurred on that fateful day. I see it with new police officers who weren't yet born, were toddlers, or were still in elementary school when September 11, 2001, took place. I see it with my own son and his friends.

For them, September 11, 2001, is something they find or see on the Internet. It is becoming a footnote in history rather than a lived experience. Those of us who lived through that day have a responsibility to make sure it does not simply fade into the pages of history. We have a duty to help the next generation understand what happened, why it mattered, and why we must never forget.

As I end this message, 25 years later, I am reminded of something else. With all the divisiveness that continues to try to weave itself into our daily lives, we cannot let it.

Treat each other like we did in the days, weeks, and months after that tragic day. Treat each other with dignity. Treat each other with respect. Stand together when times are difficult. Look out for your neighbors, your friends, and even those with whom you may disagree.

Twenty-five years later, let us remember what brought us together.

NEVER FORGET. ALWAYS REMEMBER.

Take Care & Be Well,
-Hailey Police Chief Steve England
