Please join us in recognizing Xavier Smith for the remarkable achievements that have earned him recognition from the Haines City City Commission.

A Haines City High School graduate, Xavier built a reputation for excellence through his dedication, work ethic, and athletic ability, excelling in both football and basketball during his high school career. He went on to attend Florida A&M University, where he became one of the program’s most accomplished receivers, earning All-SWAC and HBCU All-American honors.

Throughout his collegiate career, Xavier accumulated more than 2,500 receiving yards and was named Offensive MVP of the HBCU Legacy Bowl, solidifying his place among the top players in HBCU football. His success has continued at the professional level, where he proudly represents his hometown on a larger stage.

In recognition of his accomplishments and the positive example he sets for others, the City Commission approved the creation of a Green Placard honoring Xavier’s achievements and contributions. The placard will be displayed within the City of Haines City as a lasting tribute to his success and the pride he brings to our community.

Congratulations, Xavier. Your hard work, perseverance, and dedication continue to inspire the next generation and showcase the talent that comes from Haines City.

Please join us in congratulating Haines City native and Haines City High School graduate Derwin James Jr. on being honored by the Haines City City Commission for his outstanding athletic achievements, positive representation of our community, and continued commitment to giving back.

From his days as a standout student-athlete at Haines City High School to becoming one of the NFL’s premier defensive players, Derwin has consistently demonstrated excellence, leadership, and perseverance both on and off the field. Despite achieving success on the national stage, he has remained deeply connected to his hometown, serving as a role model and source of inspiration for countless young people throughout our community.

In recognition of his accomplishments and lasting impact, the City Commission approved the creation of a Green Placard honoring Derwin’s achievements and contributions to the community. The placard will be displayed within the City of Haines City as a lasting tribute to his accomplishments and the pride he brings to his hometown.

During this evening’s City Commission meeting, the City of Haines City officially proclaimed June 2026 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

The proclamation recognizes the contributions of LGBTQ+ residents, students, city employees, business owners, and community organizations who help make Haines City a diverse and welcoming community. It also highlights the importance of promoting acceptance, respect, and equal treatment for all people.

The proclamation was accepted by Abigail Workman on behalf of local organizations and individuals who support, educate, and advocate for members of the LGBTQ+ community throughout Polk County.

The City of Haines City celebrates the diversity that strengthens our community and encourages all residents to continue fostering understanding, inclusion, and respect for one another.

At tonight’s City Commission meeting, Mayor Vernel Smith Jr. and the Haines City Commission proclaimed June 5, 2026, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Haines City.

This proclamation recognizes the impact gun violence has on individuals, families, and communities across our nation, while honoring the lives lost and the survivors whose lives have been forever changed.

The City of Haines City remains committed to supporting efforts that promote public safety, responsible firearm storage, community education, and violence prevention. We encourage residents, businesses, organizations, and community partners to work together to help reduce gun violence and build a safer future for all.

Looking for a fun way to spend your Saturday evening?

Join the Haines City Police Department and City staff for Flops & Cops this Saturday, June 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lake Eva Aquatic Center.

This free event is open to children of all ages, regardless of where they live. The pool and splash area will be open, and Haines City Police Officers and lifeguards will be on duty throughout the event.

Important reminders:
• Parents or guardians must remain present at all times.
• We ask that children bring a school ID if they have one.
• No pool floats or noodles are permitted.
• Life jackets must be U.S. Coast Guard approved.
• Small children must wear swim diapers.
• This event is designed for children and families, so we ask that adults attend with a child.
• Admission will be available until we reach capacity at 401 people.

Mayor on the Move!

Mayor Vernel Smith greeted students from across the county this morning at CareerSource Polk Summer Youth Leadership Institute. Students are participating in a weeklong onboarding program before they are placed at worksites across Polk. Haines City is a proud participant in the program.

During his address to the crowd, Smith gave advice to the students including always dress for success, don’t be afraid to make mistakes and build relationships.

“Work hard, have fun and make it a summer you will never forget,” Smith said.

The Utilities Department will be conducting utility work for a sewer tap on South 9th Street near Scenic Highway on June 4, 2026.

Work will take place between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm.

Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area and to follow all posted signage and directions from on-site personnel.
