🌱 A Little Green Goes a Long Way!

While many fields are winding down for the growing season, others are just getting started!

Cover crops are an important conservation practice that helps protect our soil throughout the fall and winter. By keeping living roots in the ground, cover crops help reduce erosion, improve soil health, absorb excess nutrients, and protect water quality.

What looks like a simple green field is actually doing some pretty important work beneath the surface!

🐾 And it's not a bad place to enjoy a beautiful fall afternoon, either!

🍂 Your fall cleanup can wait!

Before you tidy up every corner of your yard, consider leaving a little for wildlife:

🌻 Leave dried flower heads standing—the seeds provide food for birds.
🍁 Keep some fallen leaves in garden beds to shelter overwintering insects.
🐛 Leave a few undisturbed areas where wildlife can find cover through the colder months.

A little less yard work for you can mean a little more habitat for them!

🚜🌾 Happy National Farmers Day!

Today, we celebrate the hardworking men and women who dedicate their lives to agriculture. From raising livestock and growing crops to caring for the land that sustains us, farmers play a vital role in our communities.

Here at Halifax Soil & Water Conservation District, agriculture is close to our hearts. Many of our Board of Directors are farmers themselves, bringing firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the importance of protecting our soil and water resources for future generations.

We are proud to work alongside our local farming community to promote conservation practices that keep our farms productive and our natural resources healthy.

To all our farmers, thank you for your hard work, dedication, and commitment to the land. We appreciate you today and every day!

🌱 Soil Buddies are back!

We kicked off our first-grade Soil Buddy lessons at Cluster Springs Elementary with Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Stevens’ classes! Students learned about soil, plants, and what plants need to grow before making their very own Soil Buddies. Now they get to watch and wait for their buddies’ “hair” to grow!

We’ll be visiting more first-grade classrooms over the next few weeks, and we’re looking forward to making lots more Soil Buddies along the way!

Thank you, Cluster Springs Elementary, for having us!

National Farm Safety and Health Week

This week is National Farm Safety and Health Week, a good reminder that while the work needs to get done, nothing is more important than getting home safely at the end of the day.

It’s also a busy time of year for our no-till drill rental program! In fact, this drill just left our office headed to its next farm.

Over the next several weeks, our drills will be moving from farm to farm throughout Halifax County. They are wide and have to travel slowly, so if you find yourself behind one—or any piece of farm equipment—please slow down, give it plenty of space, and pass only when it is safe to do so.

We encourage our farmers to work safely, take care of themselves, and look out for one another. And we encourage everyone traveling our rural roads to help keep them safe, too.

❤️ A few extra minutes behind slow-moving equipment is worth someone making it home safely.

Hello, September!

The calendar may say September, but this week’s heatwave is reminding us that summer isn’t finished yet! Our fields, pastures, gardens, and waterways are still feeling the effects of the hot, dry weather, and we could certainly use a good, soaking rain here in Halifax County.

Still, September brings signs of a new season—including harvest time on our local farms and perhaps a new generation learning to appreciate agriculture.

What is the first sign of fall that you look forward to most—cooler mornings, harvest time, changing leaves, or something else?

Here’s hoping September brings cooler days and some much-needed rainfall!

Recent headlines about precision-fermented egg protein and increased tariff-free beef imports have started important conversations about where our food comes from.

New food technologies and global markets may continue to change what we find on store shelves, but our local farmers and ranchers across America continue doing the daily work of raising safe, dependable food while caring for the land.

As consumers, one of the most meaningful things we can do is learn where our food comes from, read labels, ask questions, and support American and local producers whenever possible.

When given the choice, do you look for locally raised or Product of USA foods?

Affordable food matters, but so does maintaining a strong domestic food supply. Supporting American farmers today helps ensure that we still have American farms producing our food tomorrow.
