Heating assistance via Kennebec Wood Bank…

We're supporting Kennebec County residents experiencing temporary heating hardships—whether you're bridging the gap before assistance benefits arrive, facing a personal emergency, or struggling to cover heating costs.

Each household can receive 1/3 of a cord of seasoned wood per season (enough to last about 2–3 weeks as a primary heat source). There are no income requirements to receive free firewood; our program is simply intended to help neighbors who are truly in need. Residents will need to pick up their wood at one of our sites - a truck or small trailer is suggested. Our volunteer team will help load the wood.

We’ve partnered with the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program (KVCAP) to help manage requests and schedule pickups. To get started, call KVCAP’s heating assistance team at 207-859-1500, Option #1. We will be distributing firewood on Saturday mornings, beginning, October 10th.

Feel free to share this post or tag someone who might need a helping hand this season! 🪵🤝

The G.O.A.T. Community Volunteers really really earned their badges this morning. 👍👍

The weather turned out perfect and the slope above the (closed)* Last Crane Standing exhibit was cleared of the aptly placed Public Works’ tarp, weeded, composted, and replanted! Volunteers also cut knotweed, deadheaded the pollinator garden & shrub area, and general weeding.🪏🪏

On the slope a combination of low growing cypress and native bush honeysuckle were selected to enhance the existing junipers and to add erosion control, bank stabilization, and seasonal color. 🤞🤞

Many thanks to Anthony, Jacqueline, Jean, Karen, John D., Sylvie, John J., Sara, Bill, Stephanie, and Rosemary.🙏🙏

Next mid week session will be Sept 30 at 1pm to possibly move wood chips & continue planting at the park.

This planting for slope restoration was made possible by the generosity of Kennebec Savings Bank. Thank You!
