It was a busy week for the HHS Classroom Without Walls Class (CWW). The class traveled with the Native American Studies class to Polson. The 1st night, students worked with researchers from the Owl Research Institute to study and band Northern Saw-Whet owls at the Flathead Biological Research Station. From 7:30pm to 12:30am, six owls were captured & banded before being released. The owls were safely handled as part of a licensed research study conducted by the Owl Research Institute. The next day, students toured the Jocko River Trout Hatchery and the CSKT Bison Range before heading home.
The students then participated in a fish population count on Skalkaho Creek under the direction of the Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. Students were involved the recapture and will use the data to conduct a population estimate of brown trout in Skalkaho Creek. Both of these field trips were incredible. Thank you to the biologists and volunteers who gave up their time to teach and share these experiences with our students. Thank you to SFGRF, HHS FFE, and the NASX class for helping to fund these experiences.
