Auditor Statement on the Levy Calculator

During election season, the Butler County Auditor’s Office strives to provide clear, impartial information to help residents understand the potential cost of ballot issues. Our online levy calculator estimates the additional property tax for an individual property based on the issue’s certified millage rate and the property’s current value.

The levy calculator estimates the cost of the specific issue being considered. It does not account for other levies or changes that could affect a property’s total tax bill. The Auditor’s Office administers levies and bond issues for 10 school districts, 13 townships, seven cities, four social service agencies, libraries and parks—totaling hundreds of individual issues—and would not have detailed financial information for these entities or be able to provide explanations on plans for those entities.

Local governments and agencies proposing ballot issues are responsible for explaining their purpose and financial impact. They can also provide information about circumstances that may affect future tax collections, such as plans to pay off bonds early, discontinue existing levies, or begin collecting a new bond after others roll off. Some issues, such as renewal levies, may not result in an increase in taxes. Every district asking for your tax dollars must make the case to voters directly.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

Property taxes are a hot topic right now, with strong arguments on both sides of the debate about their role in homeownership and local government funding. This recent Politico Magazine article does a solid job laying out the perspectives from homeowners pushing for major changes and the concerns raised by local officials about impacts on services. If you’re interested in understanding the full range of views, I recommend reading it.

As always, feel free to review your own property records or reach out with questions about valuations and assessments in our county by calling 513-887-3154.

The argument that property taxes make Americans renters in their own houses has fueled the biggest anti-tax uprising in half a century, and local governments are scrambling.

Our Real Estate Manager Chasity McAnulty and I presented to the Ross School Board last night on the 1/1/26 Reval, additional state Homestead Exemption, inflation cap credit, and property tax reform. Great discussion with many questions asked and answered. It is our pleasure to meet and discuss the many issues facing Butler Countians and local governments in general.
