Oh My Gourd! 🎃

In Search Of: Discarded jack-o'-lanterns and left-over pumpkins

Purpose: Launching them into a field!

Why are we looking to launch your pumpkins? Well, it’s fun. But also, it keeps them out of the landfill.

While seeing how far pumpkins will fly is not the strictest definition of composting, the concept still lands in science. Keeping organic matter, like food scraps and pumpkins, out of landfills helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It’s true that pumpkins (and other organic matter) will still release CO2 as they break down- however, it is significantly less than if they were degrading in a no/low oxygen environment like a landfill. Composting also returns nutrients back into the ecosystem and can help repair compacted and nutrient leached soils. A win/win.

Join us November 7th from 1:00-3:00pm at Meadow Ridge MetroPark's Archery Range. Want to compost your pumpkin but can’t join us? Look out for ‘pumpkin drop off’ spots located at Voice of America MetroPark and Rentschler Forest MetroPark. More information coming soon!

Leave your leaves! 🍂

Fallen leaves and dried plant stems may look like yard waste, but they provide important benefits for your yard and local wildlife.

Leaf litter helps insulate the soil, retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide shelter for overwintering wildlife. Native bees, butterflies, moths, and fireflies all depend on leaf litter, plant stems, and other natural debris to survive the winter.

You don't have to leave every leaf exactly where it falls. If you prefer a tidier yard, try these simple steps:

Move, don't remove: Rake leaves into garden beds, around trees, or into a designated area instead of bagging them for disposal.

Leave stems standing: Keep dried native plant stems in place through winter, or leave about a foot of stem when trimming them back.

Wait until spring to clean up: Give overwintering insects time to emerge before clearing leaves and cutting back plants. Wait until temperatures consistently reach about 50°F before beginning your spring cleanup.

A little less yard work this fall can make a big difference for wildlife next spring. Leave the leaves, and give nature a place to rest until warmer weather returns!

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day- a time to honor the vibrant cultures, histories, and enduring legacies of America’s first peoples.

MetroParks stewards nearly 5,000 acres of land that were once home to the Myaamia and Shawnee peoples, who were displaced from southwest Ohio during European settlement.

This day also serves as a reminder of why education matters- learning about Ohio’s past, our shared future, and the environmental legacy we leave for generations to come.

💚 How will you help celebrate and preserve Butler County’s greenspaces today and every day?
