The courtroom in the Leon Ford III Memorial Justice Building in Hammond will now be named in honor of the late Judge Grace Bennett Gasaway.
City Council President Kip Andrews authored the ordinance which was adopted unanimously by the Hammond Council to honor Gasaway, who served as City Court Judge from 1997 until her death in 2021.
“We are so grateful and truly humbled that the Council took this action to honor the legacy of Judge Gasaway in such a meaningful way,” City Court Judge C. Britain Sledge III said.
“Judge Gasaway served this court for more than 25 years, bringing great emphasis to the issue of truancy among our local students and creating innovative programs to modernize our court,” Sledge said.
A formal dedication ceremony is planned on Thursday, October 29, at 5 p.m.
