Do you know that EAWRC is nestled within an extensive trail system?
This summer, with the help of our dedicated staff and volunteers, the Suffolk County Parks Department widened and improved two short trails around our hospital, making it even easier to explore and enjoy the wildlife that calls this area home.
As you walk, keep your eyes open! You might spot ducks, geese, Fowler’s toads, box turtles, and even Italian Wall Lizards. Yes, we have lizards!
You may also have the special opportunity to encounter some of our resident birds of prey enjoying a walk outdoors with their handlers.
Be sure to look for the trail signs created by our amazing volunteer Dina, located at the trail entrances and along the way.
We invite you to come explore, enjoy the natural beauty around EAWRC, and discover just how much wildlife is right here in our own backyard!

As the days get shorter and we spend more time driving after dark, let’s remember to look out for our wildlife. Please slow down, stay alert and keep an eye out for deer, squirrels and other creatures crossing our roads, especially around dawn and dusk.

Fall is also a good time to take a few minutes to put away outdoor nets and hammocks. Sports nets, tennis and volleyball nets, hammocks and other mesh materials can become dangerous traps for wildlife. Deer, particularly bucks with growing antlers, can easily become entangled, leading to serious or even life-threatening injuries.

Sadly, we see the consequences of these accidents far too often.
A few minutes of prevention can make all the difference. Slow down, pack up the nets and help keep Long Island’s wildlife safe this fall.

This past week, we had the joy of releasing four beautiful swans back into the wild after months of care and rehabilitation at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center.

Each swan arrived separately throughout the summer, and raising them was no small feat! From specialized waterfowl enclosures and nutritious diets to plenty of time in the water to support their growing bodies, our dedicated hospital team worked tirelessly to ensure each swan grew strong enough to survive on its own.

One of these swans, who first arrived over Memorial Day weekend, was even given the opportunity to reunite with its family. Unfortunately, one of its parents wasn’t quite ready to welcome it back, and our team had to step in for a second rescue. The best news? Post-release checks indicate that all four swans are thriving!

After months of dedication, there’s nothing more rewarding than watching our patients return to where they belong. Thank you to our incredible team for making these happy endings possible!

Meet the Ambassadors! We’re kicking off a new series introducing you to the incredible educational animals who help us teach our community about Long Island’s wildlife, and first up is Vlad the Turkey Vulture!

Vlad came to the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in August 2018 after being hit by a train in Hampton Bays and suffering a fractured wing. After treatment and rehabilitation, she was eventually cleared for release. Unfortunately, Vlad had become a little too comfortable around people (and their food!), which meant life in the wild was no longer the safest option for her.

Luckily, Vlad found a new calling as one of our Wildlife Ambassadors, helping us educate others about her species and the important role turkey vultures play in our ecosystem. 💚

As nature’s “clean-up crew,” turkey vultures are scavengers that help keep our environment healthy, and Vlad is helping us spread the word!

Come say hi to Vlad in person! She’ll be joining us at this Friday, October 9 from 12–1:30 p.m. for Birds of Prey! Stop by to meet Vlad, learn more about her species and get an up-close look at some of Long Island’s incredible wildlife.

Stay tuned as we introduce you to more of our amazing Ambassadors!
