Virginia’s Fall Free Fishing Days are coming up Sept. 25-27!

During Free Fishing Days, anglers can fish recreationally in Virginia’s fresh and saltwater without purchasing a fishing license.

It’s a great opportunity to introduce someone new to fishing, take the family out or spend a little more time on the water.

Young anglers can make the weekend even more memorable through the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament’s Junior Expert Angler Awards Program. Anglers 15 and younger can earn Youth Citations for qualifying saltwater catches, including a Junior Expert Angler Citation Plaque!

All other fishing regulations, including seasons, size limits and possession limits, remain in effect.

On Tuesday, members of the 2026 Governor’s Fellows Program joined Virginia Marine Resources Commission for an on-the-water tour aboard Virginia Marine Police vessels.

The group traveled from Fort Monroe to the Elizabeth River, accompanied by VMRC staff, for a firsthand look at Virginia’s marine resources, waterways and the work of Virginia Marine Police.

After returning to Fort Monroe, the Fellows joined VMRC staff for lunch and a presentation from Scott Martin, CEO of the Fort Monroe Authority.

Thank you to the Governor’s Fellows for spending the day with us and learning more about VMRC’s work across the Commonwealth’s tidal waters.

Summer in Virginia is calling.

Earlier this week, the Virginia Marine Police and the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament partnered with the Sunshine Program and the Norfolk Anglers Club to take youth from the East Ocean View Community Center fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.

There were plenty of smiles, plenty of fish, and a few croaker, grey trout, and bluefish brought over the rail.

Virginia, it’s your turn. Go fishing!

Planning to target tilefish?

Virginia anglers should take a few minutes to review NOAA Fisheries’ latest reminder about recreational tilefish permitting and trip reporting requirements.

If you are targeting blueline or golden tilefish from Virginia northward, make sure you understand whether you need a NOAA private recreational tilefish permit and how to submit the required electronic trip report after your trip.

These requirements can apply even if tilefish are targeted but not caught, so it is worth checking before you head offshore.
