Many people by now have seen the video from Stafford First Selectman Bill Morrison describing the irate phone call he got from Senator Jeff Gordon last week, in which Jeff threatened to retaliate against Morrison for supporting Ethan Werstler.
While we have been strong supporters of Ethan for many reasons, those reasons were mostly about expecting more from our State Senator. Our support was never just about Jeff’s character, and this truly was not a side of Jeff we knew much about.
But it made us think back to this past spring. We have been paying attention to Jeff’s votes (or, as he calls it, his “track record”). Most judicial nominations at the state level pass with zero opposition and without much notice. When Leah (Schad) Pollard was confirmed this May, it was newsworthy: she was the first judicial nominee from Windham County in 15 years.
The House confirmed her unanimously. The Senate voted 35 to 1.
The one “no” was Jeff Gordon.
He’s never said why. If there had been a real problem with her, you’d expect at least one other senator to join him. Not one did.
We don’t know what was behind that vote. But put next to last week’s attack on Bill Morrison, it seems more likely that this was some sort of petty grievance he was protesting. We don’t know who he was “sending a message to” with that vote. Perhaps it was Sen. Flexer, who championed the nomination - but even then - we don't know what that grievance might have been. Whoever it was and whatever the reason, now we feel we have the key to decoding that message. We don’t need a State Senator who puts his own ego and personal grudges ahead of his constituents.
We need to expect more for a change. Vote Ethan Werstler by November 3.
