Mental illness doesn’t always look like struggle. Sometimes, it hides behind success, strength and achievement.

Former Iowa State basketball standout Lyndsey Fennelly knows that firsthand. Drawing from her personal journey, Fennelly challenged employees from Corn Belt Power’s member systems, including Franklin REC, on Monday, Oct. 12, to rethink what it means to be strong, embrace vulnerability and recognize when it’s time to ask for help.

An All-American, Hall of Famer, WNBA draft pick, coach and entrepreneur, Fennelly knows the demands of high performance. But her message went far beyond the basketball court. Through candid reflections on her own mental health journey, she emphasized the importance of prioritizing personal well-being, recognizing that even the strongest among us can struggle and understanding that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s an act of strength.

Don't let phantom energy haunt your electric bill this October!

As fall temperatures fluctuate, your thermostat settings can make a big difference on energy bills. On cooler days, lower the thermostat… and raise it during days that are warmer. On milder days, consider turning off your heating/cooling system altogether. A smart thermostat is also convenient for making temperature adjustments––and saving energy––even easier.

Is your unit due for a check up before winter is here? Franklin REC may have a rebate to help with the checkup: https://www.franklinrec.coop/rebates-and-energy-efficiency.

Scheduling system maintenance now can help your heating system run more efficiently this winter. Replace your air filter regularly and schedule a professional tune-up before the winter chill arrives. A well-maintained system can improve comfort and help manage energy use.

Franklin REC has contracted with Maverick Utility Services to test our poles in Reeve and Geneva Townships in Franklin County. The testing will last approximately four weeks.

You may notice colored ribbons on utility poles around the county. Our contractor, Maverick Utility Services, uses these ribbons as a color guide to mark poles that need attention.

This is part of Franklin REC’s ongoing diligence to ensure safe and reliable electrical service for our members.

⚠️ Important: The marked poles are our responsibility, not the responsibility of members.

Thank you for helping us keep your electricity safe and reliable!

As we continue to celebrate National Co-op Month, recognizing our members is a must! Members are the heart of co-ops. Unlike traditional businesses that are led by investors or shareholders, co-ops are led by the members they serve––and that positively impacts priorities. Investing locally and providing long-term value is the co-op way. ❤️
