Wailua Valley State Wayside is a small park/lookout tucked into the cliffs a few miles past Keʻanae along the Road to Hana.

One of the smallest stops on the Road to Hana also has one of the biggest views. The Wailua Valley State Wayside is a stop not to miss.

Tucked into a deep, lush valley between roughly mile markers 13 and 14, Honomanū Bay is one of the Road to Hāna’s most dramatic coastal stops. Steep green mountains surround a secluded black-pebble beach, giving the bay a much wilder feel than many of Maui’s developed beach parks. There are no restrooms, lifeguards, showers, or other facilities here, and swimming can be hazardous depending on surf and conditions.

⚠️ Important: The road down to the bay is rough, unpaved, and conditions can change significantly after rain. Use a 4x4/high-clearance vehicle if driving down, and make sure your rental agreement permits it. Vehicle break-ins can also be an issue in remote Road to Hāna areas, so do not leave your vehicle unattended or leave valuables inside. If you’re not comfortable with the access, enjoy the spectacular view from the Hāna Highway overlooks instead.

Since the 1970s, Paia Town has gotten plenty of recognition as the laid back, surfer hippie town While most people breeze by on their early morning drive to explore the Road to Hana, we recommend taking the time to discover one of Hawaii's coolest towns.

The starting point for The Road to Hana. This quirky oceanside surf-town offers unique shopping and dining options.

For travelers who want to turn the Road to Hāna into more than a day trip, Hāna-Maui Resort is one of East Maui’s signature places to stay. Spread across 75 tropical acres overlooking the Pacific, the resort has just 66 rooms and suites, including spacious oceanfront bungalows that capture the quiet, uncrowded feel Hāna is known for.

Guests can slow things down with an ocean-view infinity pool, spa treatments, complimentary yoga and meditation, or simply relax on a private lanai after a day of waterfalls, beaches and rainforest exploring. Dining includes breakfast overlooking Hāna Bay, casual poolside food and drinks, and Hāna Ranch Restaurant across the road, which serves locally inspired dishes using ingredients from Maui farmers, ranchers and fishermen.

Staying overnight also changes the Road to Hāna experience completely—you can explore the area at a much more relaxed pace instead of racing the clock to drive back before dark.

Just after mile marker 31, Hāna Farms is one of the best places to turn a Road to Hāna stop into an actual meal. Its open-air Bamboo Hale serves farm-to-table island plates using ingredients grown right on the seven-acre farm and sourced from other Hāna-area farms. Think fresh harvest salads packed with tropical greens, smoked pulled pork, locally inspired specials, and plenty of ingredients that haven’t traveled very far to reach your plate.

The roadside market and bakery are worth a stop on their own, especially for the famous banana bread, baked fresh in flavors like original, macadamia nut, chocolate chip and pineapple. And if you’re craving their wood-fired farm pizza, plan accordingly, pizza is currently served on Fridays only, when the Bamboo Hale stays open later and features live music.

It’s fresh, casual, distinctly Hāna, and exactly the kind of meal that fits a day exploring East Maui.

Hidden beneath the rainforest near Hāna, the Hāna Lava Tube, also known as Kaʻeleku Caverns, offers a fascinating look beneath Maui’s surface. The cave was formed when the outside of a lava flow cooled and hardened while molten lava continued moving underneath, eventually leaving behind the massive underground passage visitors can explore.

Normally, the self-guided experience takes roughly 30–45 minutes, with flashlights provided to illuminate unusual lava formations and the cavern’s enormous volcanic walls. Important 2026 update: the Hāna Lava Tube is currently temporarily closed while an archaeological inventory survey is conducted, with no reopening date announced yet. Definitely check its status before adding it to your Road to Hāna itinerary.
