Two weeks from today is your chance to chat about how to make Hanover's streets safe for all. We invite you to attend the Safe Streets Action Plan Public Engagement Meeting on Monday, October 26th here at the Public Administration Building at 6:30PM in the Council Chambers.

The meeting will include an introduction to the study and its goals followed by workshop activities that include multiple, interactive ‘stations’ at which citizens may provide input in various ways:
• What/Why are the Problems? Help identify broad, area-wide issues to program/policy issues
• Where Are the Problems? Help identify where safety problems and concerns are located
• When Are Problems Occurring? Help identify the times of day and night of greatest concern.

Your contribution is important as we work toward Safe Streets for All!

Congratulations to our own Annie-Laure Woappi!

Join us in congratulating our amazing Annie-Laure Woappi and celebrating our AWARD-WINNING Senior Health and Wellness Workshops!

On Tuesday, October 6th, staff attended the Pennsylvania Library Association Conference, and our very own Adult Services Manager Annie-Laure Woappi accepted TWO PA Forward Adult Literacy Programming awards for her weekly Senior Health and Wellness Workshops: the 2026 Best Health Literacy Program Award and the overall Best Adult Literacy Program Award.

PA Forward is a state literacy initiative that highlights "the five literacies"—skills that are essential to success, progress, and quality of life: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy. Guthrie Memorial Library is a Gold Star Library and strives to educate our community on these five literacies with our free programs.

The Senior Health and Wellness Workshops meet every Tuesday at 10:15 am in the library's Bare Center. These weekly workshops often begin with a speaker that teaches us about a new topic in health and wellness, game, or activity, and ends with a free hot lunch* and social hour. To register, please call 717-632-5183.

*You must be 65 or older to receive a hot lunch.

🚦 Help Shape Hanover’s Safe Streets Action Plan!

The Borough of Hanover will host a public engagement meeting as part of its Safe Streets for All (SS4A) study on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 6:30 PM in Borough Council Chambers at the Borough of Hanover Public Administration Building, 33 Frederick Street.

The SS4A study is a comprehensive, system-wide look at transportation safety throughout Hanover. The goal is to better understand the experiences of everyone who travels throughout the Borough and identify opportunities to improve safety.

📍 What to Expect

The meeting will be led by Kathy Poole, Senior Project Manager with Dewberry, the consulting firm assisting the Borough with the study.

Following an introduction to the study and its goals, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in interactive workshop stations focused on:

• What & Why Are the Problems? — Identify broad, area-wide, program and policy issues.
• Where Are the Problems? — Identify locations where safety problems or concerns exist.
• When Are Problems Occurring? — Identify times of day or night when concerns are greatest.
• How Can We Fix Them? — Share ideas and potential solutions that could help address the issues identified.

Community input will be carefully considered as the study progresses and will help shape the Borough’s Safe Streets Action Plan, which will provide a framework for future safety improvements and may help position the Borough to pursue funding for implementation projects.

The Borough’s leadership has committed to achieving zero roadway fatalities by 2040.

The workshop will also include data collected through Dewberry’s existing conditions investigations, including crash data, environmental contributors, high-injury network identification, network volumes, equity and underserved community conditions, and other relevant information.

🗣️ Language Assistance & Accommodations

Interpreters will be available on site to assist Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking attendees.

Individuals requiring special accommodations are asked to notify the Borough in advance to allow sufficient time to make appropriate arrangements.

The Borough wants residents and community members to feel heard. Your experiences, concerns and ideas are an important part of understanding Hanover’s transportation network and planning for its future.

We encourage you to attend, participate and help shape the future of transportation safety in Hanover!

The SS4A study is being conducted with federal support through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

The Borough of Hanover will be performing semi-annual hydrant flushing Monday through Thursday, October 5th - 8th.

Public hydrants and dead-end lines located mainly west of Baltimore and Carlisle Streets including McSherrystown Borough and Conewago Township will be flushed on October 5th & 6th.

Hydrants located east of Baltimore and Carlisle Streets will be flushed on October 7th & 8th.

Flushing will begin at 8AM and run to approximately 4PM.
Customers may experience discolored water. If this happens, run the cold tap for a few minutes until the water runs clear. Also, we suggest that you postpone doing laundry during flushing times to avoid potential staining.

Please be aware that the strong force of water may dislodge debris on the road. Please move vehicles to avoid incidental damage. Additionally, care should be taken when driving on roads where water is actively flushing. If you have any questions, please contact the Borough of Hanover at 717-637-3877.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation!
