The Hanover Fire Department is closely monitoring the nor’easter expected to impact Eastern Massachusetts this weekend. Our department will have additional staffing in place and is prepared to respond to whatever Mother Nature brings.

As the storm approaches, please take a few minutes to prepare your home and family and keep these important safety reminders in mind:

-If you encounter a downed or low-hanging power line, stay well away from it and anything it may be touching. Always assume downed wires are energized. Do not attempt to move a wire or drive over it. Call 911 to report downed power lines or other immediate hazards.

-Power outages should be reported directly to National Grid. Reporting your outage helps the utility companies to identify affected areas and coordinate restoration efforts. The latest estimated restoration times and outage information can also be found on National Grid’s website. Please do not call 911 or the Hanover Fire Department to ask when your power will be restored, we are not provided any additional information beyond what National Grid provides on their website. Also, restoration crews normally begin work when wind gusts have reduced to safe operating levels.

-If you use a portable generator during an outage, operate it outdoors and well away from your home, garage, doors, windows, and vents. Never operate a generator inside a home, basement, garage, shed, or other enclosed or partially enclosed space. Carbon monoxide from generators can be deadly, and is colorless and odorless. Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms.

-Secure outdoor furniture, decorations, trash barrels, and other loose objects before winds increase.

-Avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm, and never drive through flooded roadways.

-Please check on neighbors, particularly older adults and anyone who may need assistance during an extended power outage.

The Hanover Fire Department will be ready throughout the storm. Please stay safe, use caution, and call 911 for emergencies.

Congratulations to firefighter/paramedic Josh Morrison, who recently completed his Fire Officer II certification. Great work, Josh!

Congratulations to the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy's most recent Fire Officer II class! After more than 60 hours of classroom instruction and independent study, these front-line supervisors have honed their leadership abilities and developed a wide range of management skills vital on the fireground, in the firehouse, and across the community.

Academy staff have worked exceedingly hard to deliver more of these sought-after courses, with the result that FO2 enrollments have more than tripled since 2024. Great work by these latest students, who represented the Barnstable Fire Department, Brewster Fire Department, Falmouth Fire/Rescue, Hanover MA Fire Department, Hanson Fire Department, Massport Fire/Rescue, Middleborough Fire Department, New Bedford Fire Department, Norwell Fire Department, Pembroke Fire Department, MA, FD, Seekonk Fire Department, and West Bridgewater Fire Department. Thank you to our instructors for supporting firefighter professional development!
