We are proud to announce that now serving and protecting the Courthouse District is a new piece of fire apparatus- Fire-Rescue (FR) 405!

FR405 previously served in other locations across the county. As new FR units have been placed into service with the support of the County, this particular unit had many more years of service left and we are proud to to have it serve the district.

FR405 is capable of EMS and small fire supression. It will replace two Courthouse units, previous Car 405 a Chevy Tahoe BLS unit and our Brush Jeep, Brush 405 . FR405 is better equipped and more capable of handling both the EMS and supression roles in one unit.

Thank you to our awesome team for making the switch and new lettering happen.

Tonight your Courthouse Volunteers staffed FR405 and Engine 405.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our Brothers and Sisters up north.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our Brothers and Sisters up north.

It is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of Firefighter Mason Fercovic-Ortegel, who tragically died in an off-duty drowning incident at Lake Anna. Mason was only 24 years old.

This is a heartbreaking loss for Mason’s family, friends, coworkers, and our entire FREM family. We ask that you keep his family and everyone who knew and loved Mason in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Our department will stand beside Mason’s family and our members in the days ahead. We will do everything we can to support them, care for one another, and honor Mason and his service to our community.

Please continue to lift up Mason’s family, friends, and fellow department members.

Rest easy, Mason. You will not be forgotten.

Please consider joining the department in an emergency preparedness and prevention event.

Drought conditions and poor air quality continue in the Courthouse and Hanover area.

Please minimize outdoor activities and hydrate.

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires has moved into our region, resulting in unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality today. If possible, limit prolonged outdoor activity, especially if you have asthma, heart or lung disease or are otherwise sensitive to smoke. Conditions are expected to improve as the smoke moves out of the area this weekend.

In 2021, Hanover Fire-EMS lost Battalion Chief Jeff Phipps to cancer.

Jeff was deeply respected not only for his quick wit, but for his unwavering commitment to mentoring others. He had a rare ability to turn every call into a learning opportunity. It was common to find him at the tailboard or front door after an incident, walking new officers through the “why” behind each decision.

Much of Jeff’s career was spent with Battalion 402, B-Shift, where he became highly skilled in rural water supply operations and leading complex incidents with limited resources. His experience and leadership left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

Outside of the job, Jeff looked forward to St. Patrick’s Day each year, often traveling to Savannah to celebrate. He valued connection, camaraderie, and making the most of every moment.

In his final months, Jeff dedicated himself to raising awareness about the health risks firefighters face. He became a strong advocate for annual physicals and early detection, encouraging his fellow firefighters to take their health seriously.

Jeff’s legacy continues through his wife, Carolyn, who serves as the first-ever Spouse Mentor for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. She carries forward his mission, advocating for federal recognition and coverage of firefighter cancer-related line-of-duty deaths.

Chief Phipps’ impact—both personal and professional—continues to guide and inspire.

We want to wish everyone happy 4th!

Hanover Fire-EMS wishes everyone a safe and happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸

Tips for a safe 4th of July!

• Very hot and humid conditions expected with temperatures near 100°
• Drink plenty of water and limit time in the heat
• Take breaks in the shade or indoors
• Check on neighbors, children, older adults, and pets

Fireworks Safety:

• Safest option: attend a professional
fireworks show
• If using consumer fireworks where legal:
• Keep children away from fireworks (even sparklers)
• Keep fireworks away from dry grass and flammable materials
• Have water or a hose nearby
• Never try to relight a “dud” firework

Stay safe and enjoy the holiday!
