UPDATE: Hanson Police would like to provide some clarification regarding the incidents reported below.

Both incidents involved juveniles who reside within the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District. There were no Silver Lake students involved, and none of the individuals involved were members of either football team. All were spectators.

Regarding the first incident, the juvenile was removed from the game and transported to the Hanson Police Department to await a parent or guardian. Criminal charges are being pursued, and the juvenile will be summonsed to Juvenile Court.

The second incident remains under investigation. During the altercation, it was reported that a knife was present; however, the knife was not used during the fight itself. No juveniles have been taken into custody in connection with the second incident at this time. Criminal charges will be determined following the completion of the investigation, which includes the identification of those involved and determining each individual's role in the altercation.

The Hanson Police Department is informing the public that officers responded to two troubling incidents at the football game between Whitman-Hanson and Silver lake tonight at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, and multiple criminal charges may be sought as a result.

Hanson Police assisted staff as they ejected several students from the game due to inappropriate behavior.

Police, who were already on scene, were then called when a fight erupted between students. While breaking up that fight, police took custody of a juvenile who refused to comply with orders and then assaulted officers despite efforts to de-escalate.

Later in the game, another fight occurred, where a juvenile was reported to have repeatedly kicked and stomped on another juvenile’s head. There were also reports of a knife being brandished at some point during the fight. The second fight remains under investigation because several involved individuals fled the area before police arrived.

Hanson Police enjoy being on the field to support Whitman-Hanson teams. The objective of officers is to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students, student athletes, and spectators. Those who create an unsafe environment are dealt with swiftly and professionally to ensure the safety of all.

We would like to thank Whitman Police and the Hanson Fire Department for their assistance, and we thank all those who attended the game tonight while behaving respectfully toward others.

With a storm expected to bring rain and strong winds to Massachusetts this weekend, the Department would like to remind residents to take steps now to prepare and stay safe.

Before the storm, residents should take precautions to ensure their homes and families are prepared for the weather. Create or review your family emergency plan, particularly if you live in an area prone to flooding, and make sure your emergency kit is stocked. Be prepared in the event you lose electricity for multiple days.

Emergency kits should include flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, first-aid supplies, necessary medications, important documents, water and other essential items.

Residents should also charge cellphones and other electronic devices before the storm and secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, decorations and other objects that could be blown around by strong winds.

Before and during the storm, monitor local weather forecasts and emergency alerts, as conditions can change quickly.

During periods of severe weather, avoid unnecessary travel and never drive through flooded roadways. Stay away from downed trees, power lines and utility wires, and always assume a downed wire is live.

If local officials issue an evacuation order, leave immediately and follow all instructions from public safety officials. Bring only essential items, documents and pets, if possible.

From the files of “Just When You Think It’s a Routine Call…”

On September 10, 2026, at approximately 12:22 PM, Hanson Police Officers working the day shift were dispatched to the area of South Street for a motor vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, Lt. Daley, Sgt. Calogero, Officer Frazier, Officer Harrington, and Officer Whalen located a black Ford Explorer that had crashed into a telephone pole before coming to rest in the middle of the roadway. The occupants were located outside of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries.

During the initial investigation, Officers quickly realized that the occupants’ accounts of what had occurred did not line up. While still on scene, Officer Whalen located am******on and fi***rm parts in the vehicle’s cupholder. Neither the registered owner of the vehicle, Michael Mazzarella, nor the passenger possessed an active Massachusetts LTC or FID.

The vehicle was subsequently towed to Hanson Police Headquarters, where Officers obtained and executed a search warrant. Detective Maliff, Officer Whalen, and Officer Regalado, who specializes in crime scene processing and evidence collection, conducted the search.

During the search, Officers located three fi***rms, including one fi***rm with an obliterated serial number, as well as additional am******on.

Based on the facts and circumstances of the investigation, Michael Mazzarella, 36yoa of Halifax MA, was placed under arrest and charged with the following violations of Massachusetts General Law:
• Carrying a Fi***rm Without an LTC/FID - 3 counts
• Receiving/Possession of an Untraceable Fi***rm
• Improper Storage of a Fi***rm - 4 counts
• Possession of Am******on Without an LTC/FID
• Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
• Marked Lanes Violation

What initially appeared to be a routine motor vehicle crash quickly turned into a much more involved investigation. This is another example of the importance of our Officers paying attention to the details and following the investigation wherever it leads.
Great work by everyone involved.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Here in Hanson, we pride ourselves on our Officers being more than just police officers. Our Officers wear many hats, and it’s those roles outside of the badge that help make us who we are and keep us connected to the community we serve.

HPD would like to wish Officer Frazier and his team the best of luck as they open their season tonight against Pembroke High School!
