At approximately 1:34 a.m. on September 7, Chikaming Township Fire Department was dispatched to westbound I-94 for a reported semi-truck and trailer fire. While crews were responding, additional information indicated the trailer was actively burning, prompting requests for mutual aid from Lake Township Fire & Rescue and New Buffalo Township Fire Department.
Upon arrival, crews found a semi-truck and trailer on fire and quickly went to work to contain and extinguish the fire. Law enforcement closed westbound I-94 to traffic, providing firefighters with a safe working area to mitigate the incident while protecting the traveling public.
Through the coordinated efforts of responding firefighters, the fire was brought under control at approximately 2:12 a.m. One westbound lane was reopened as emergency operations allowed, with crews and other agencies remaining on scene for an extended period while the vehicle and its cargo were removed. All lanes were reopened later that morning.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
