-STRUCTURE FIRE-

At approximately 2:40PM on 10/17/26 HFD was dispatched automatic aid to Columbia County Fire Rescue for a structure fire at a residence on Peri Leigh Rd.

Truck 1 responded immediately as the first due truck company with two personnel. Other responding HFD firefighters proceeded to HFD Station 1 for standby.

First arriving CCFR units found a small kitchen fire that had been extinguished by the occupants, none of which were injured. Upon arrival Truck 1 provided manpower and positive pressure ventilation equipment to remove smoke from the residence, before being released by incident command.

Eight HFD firefighters responded to the scene or to cover the station.

Earlier this year HFD personnel initiated a long term plan to equip Station 1 with physical fitness equipment for our firefighters to use to maintain a higher level of operational and physical readiness.

This week the first phase of this plan was completed with the installation of a squat rack, barbell, bench, rubber bumper plates, dumbbells and other related items. Additional weight training and cardiovascular conditioning equipment is planned for the future with structured training plans for career and volunteer personnel being developed.

HFD command staff would like to thank Harlem elected officials and administrative staff for their continued support in this effort to ensure our firefighters are equipped to prepare themselves for the physical demands that come with firefighting, as well as overall personnel physical wellness.

A few pieces of info for anyone who will be attending the 37th Oliver Hardy Festival tomorrow:

Parade line up begins at 8 AM at the City Park and will be coordinated by HFD firefighters. Parade begins at 10 AM and will run from the park down W. Milledgeville Rd. to N. Louisville St. @ W. Forest St. following the traditional parade route.

As always, HFD will have multiple mobile units staffed to respond to emergencies. Gold Cross EMS is scheduled to have an ambulance assigned to the festival that will be located on S. Hicks St. behind the HFD cooking tent at the location of the old Fire Station 2. Personnel will also be on duty to provide response to incidents outside of the festival.

Make sure to stop by the HFD cooking tent by the railroad tracks and grab some famous HFD BBQ! We will be selling sandwiches, chips, drinks and a VERY limited number of whole cooked Boston butts, with all proceeds going to the Harlem Fire Department Community Fund.

HFD also assists with operating the shuttle golf carts that take patrons from the parking areas to the festival. Main parking areas will be located at the previous North Harlem Elementary School property as well at the current school.

As of October 1, 2026 the Summer Outdoor Burning Ban for Columbia County has been lifted.

Outdoor burning of yard debris is permitted while following basic guidelines set forth by the Georgia Forestry Commission. Burn permits are no longer required, and the responsibility of burning safely falls solely on the property owner. This includes being aware of high fire danger conditions that will prevent safe outdoor burning.

For more info on outside burning regulations, follow the link below to the Georgia Forestry Commission website.

Today HFD firefighters are participating in weekend training at the Columbia County Fire Rescue Training Center in Appling, covering various techniques and methods for searching for and removing occupants from structure fires.

This includes practicing tactics that involve searching and controlling fire with the pressurized water extinguisher, utilized when performing a primary search ahead of or without a hose line.

These weekend trainings are held once a quarter and allow for the practicing of skills like these, in addition to helping maintain the department’s ISO rating.

25 years later.

September 11, 2001- FDNY Ladder 118 crosses the Brooklyn Bridge while responding to the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center. All six firefighters assigned to Ladder 118 would later perish in the collapse of the towers, but not before being credited with saving countless lives of building occupants whom they helped evacuate.

May we never forget.

-HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT-

At approximately 4:00AM on 08/10/26 HFD was dispatched and responded to a residence on Norwich Dr. for a public service call relating to suspected malfunctioning smoke alarms.

First arriving units met with the occupants who stated that after making the initial call they had discovered that a battery powered golf cart had been accidentally left on charge in the home’s garage and was found surrounded by a haze of smoke. All occupants had already evacuated and removed the golf cart from the charger. HFD personnel immediately began atmospheric metering operations, finding highly elevated carbon monoxide readings throughout all areas of the home. Ventilation was established using multiple electric positive pressure fans, and continued until metering equipment showed normal atmospheric readings. Occupants did not report any symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure and did not require medical attention.

Overcharged or malfunctioning batteries in the golf cart are the suspected source of the carbon monoxide readings, as the hydrogen gas that overcharged batteries can produce can cause home carbon monoxide alarms and metering equipment to show carbon monoxide readings.

This incident serves as a reminder to always treat any activated fire or smoke alarm as a legitimate activation until proven otherwise, and ensure battery powered vehicles and equipment are not allowed to charge indoors unattended.

While the use of consumer grade fireworks is not encouraged by HFD, it’s important to remember that Georgia state law allows for fireworks until 11:59PM on July 3rd and July 4th. State law supersedes the local noise ordinance.

Please make preparations now for family members or pets that are frightened by fireworks. As long as they are being used in a safe manner, there is nothing that can be done legally to stop someone from using fireworks during the allotted time frame.

Outside conditions in our area are incredibly dry. Take extra caution to ensure fireworks do not start grass, woods or brush fires. Dispose of fireworks after use by wetting them completely with water and placing in an outside waste container that is away from any structures.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
