🚒 Carbon Monoxide Detector Saves Lives 🚒

We recently posted 2 incidents we responded to where Smoke Detectors saved lives and property. We felt it was equally important to bring awareness to the dangers of Carbon Monoxide after an incident we responded to Monday evening.

Engine 32 responded to a residence for a CO Detector sounding with a resident who had a headache for the last 2 weeks. The resident was concerned about Carbon Monoxide and purchased a detector and instantly it began to alert when it was turned on in the house.

Units from Progress investigated and found levels up to 1400 ppm of Carbon Monoxide in the home. The natural gas was secured to the house, turned off the source of carbon monoxide and crews worked to ventilate the residence. This incident could have had a tragic outcome with the lethal levels of Carbon Monoxide found in the residence.

We urge all residents to have working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in their house and test them reguarly to keep your family protected from fire and carbon monoxide dangers. This is 3 incidents in the last week where Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors saved lives and property in Susquehanna Township.

***SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES***

October 8th Company 32 was dispatched to the 100-block of N 39th street for an activated smoke detector called in by a neighbor. Engine 32 arrived on scene with audible alarms and an odor of something burning. Lieutenant 32-1 requested the assignment to be upgraded and upon further investigation a small kitchen fire was located on the first floor. While picking up Company 32 was again dispatched to a residential fire alarm. Upon arrival Engine 32 had smoke from the front door with the occupant reporting their bedroom was on fire. The assignment was again upgraded and fire extinguished by Engine 32. Within an hour two functional smoke detectors alerted occupants and saved lives and property from further damage. Please remember to check detector functionality and battery life twice a year.

Last evening units from Progress assisted Shumaker Public Safety Center at HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College Campus with their Paramedic Class and a skills night. The Paramedic class was put through a “shift” of work responding to numerous emergencies in a training setting including a house fire with victims and a mayday along with an incident requiring removal of victims with the Tower and Stokes Basket. Progress has assisted with this night for many years and appreciates the invite to work with the Paramedic Class before they graduate.
