For many of our neighbors, being seen as a full person before being seen as a case is part of what healing looks like.⁣
⁣
Ana, our Director of Case Management, will tell you that the paperwork is never the whole story.⁣
⁣
Every day, she helps neighbors navigate housing applications, benefits, mental health referrals, and countless forms that can feel overwhelming when you’re already carrying so much.⁣
⁣
But if you asked our neighbors about her, they would tell you she remembers their story. They’d tell you she checks in. They’d tell you she makes them feel seen long before she starts asking questions.⁣
⁣
For many, feeling seen can be its own form of healing. Ana gets that in her bones. And every day, she brings it to the table. ⁣

The first cold morning of the season is coming. When our neighbors walk in looking for a coat or something warmer, we want it to already be waiting for them.⁣
⁣
Thanks to the WSFS Bank team, it will be.⁣
⁣
They spent the day with us serving meals in our kitchen, packing many more, and sorting through bags of winter clothing.⁣
⁣
Work like this is how we get ready for the colder months, and how we get through them together.⁣

Before a meal reaches someone's plate, a lot has already happened.⁣
⁣
Someone grew the food. Someone harvested it. Someone transported it. Someone unpacked it. Someone stood in a kitchen and prepared it.⁣
⁣
And after all of that, one question still matters, did the food reach the person who needed it?⁣
⁣
In 2024, 13.7% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity, about 18.3 million households. Numbers that large can become easy to distance ourselves from. But those numbers are people.⁣
⁣
At Downtown Daily Bread, breakfast and lunch are served every day because hunger doesn't wait for a holiday, or for someone's circumstances to improve.⁣
⁣
World Food Day has a date. Hunger doesn't. And neither does our kitchen.⁣

Imagine trying to explain your medical history, apply for benefits, or talk about where you slept last night, in a language that isn't your first.⁣
⁣
One misunderstood question can matter. One box checked incorrectly can delay help. And some conversations are simply too personal to ask a stranger or family member to translate.⁣
⁣
That's why having bilingual staff at Downtown Daily Bread matters.⁣
⁣
Every day, our Spanish-speaking neighbors can sit with someone who can listen to their story in their language and help them navigate intake forms, benefits, healthcare, case management, and the many other systems that often stand between homelessness and stability.⁣

A job application asks for an address. So does a doctor's office intake form, a pharmacy, a bank account. It's one line on one form, until there's nothing to put there.⁣
⁣
Losing housing doesn't only mean losing a place to sleep. It can make nearly every other part of life harder. The uncertainty of where you’ll stay, how you’ll meet your basic needs, or what tomorrow will bring can take a serious toll on mental health.⁣
⁣
And there is no single story of homelessness. The person without an address may be working. They may be a parent. A veteran. A survivor of domestic violence. Someone recovering from an illness. Someone whose rent has increased beyond what their paycheck can cover.⁣
⁣
On World Homelessness Day and World Mental Health Day, we’re asking our community to look beyond labels and see the whole person. Everyone deserves dignity, care, and a path toward stability.⁣

Nearly 1,000 pounds of fresh produce, turned into salads, soups, and warm meals for our neighbors.⁣
⁣
That’s what a season of collaboration with the Capitol Hunger Garden looks like.⁣
⁣
Now that the Garden’s season has wrapped up on September 30th, we’re grateful for every community member who gave their time and effort to make this year’s harvest possible. Special thanks to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Feeding Pennsylvania for the continued partnership.

Thank you for helping us feed Harrisburg, season after season.🧡

Imagine being injured at work and suddenly having to navigate an unfamiliar system in a language that isn’t your own.⁣
⁣
For Edwin, that meant facing an already difficult moment without the language access or support he needed.⁣
⁣
This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re making space for stories like his... the stories that remind us why being heard, understood, and treated with dignity matters.⁣
⁣
Our doors are always open. With bilingual staff ready to listen and help, we want everyone who walks through them to know: you are welcome here, and you deserve to be understood.⁣
⁣
Meet Edwin and hear his story.⁣

The population experiencing homelessness has been getting older for two decades, and most people haven't caught up to what that shift actually looks like.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Right now, roughly half of single adults experiencing homelessness in the U.S. are 50 or older, and more than 40% of them became homeless for the first time after turning 50, often after a health crisis, a lost spouse, or a fixed income that stopped covering rent years before it stopped covering anything else.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
For someone in that position, walking through our door means facing a system they've never had to use before: applying for benefits they've never needed, replacing an ID they haven't thought about in decades, learning what resources even exist. That's exactly what case management is built for, meeting someone exactly where they are, whether it's their first week or their tenth year.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Age never disqualifies anyone from needing help.💙

09/24/2026

Homelessness and mental health aren't two separate issues, even though they're usually treated that way. Prolonged instability takes a real toll: on sleep, on relationships, on any sense that things might improve.⁣
⁣
This is Su***de Prevention Month. We don't have every answer, but we have people who are trained to notice when someone's struggling, and who look past whatever immediate need brought someone in that day.Our door stays open no matter what someone's carrying when they walk through it.⁣
⁣
Asking for help here doesn't require being in crisis. If you or someone you know needs support right now, call or text 988. Day or night. 🧡⁣

Meeting people where they are is the whole idea behind Downtown Daily Bread. This month, we want to emphasize what that includes: someone's language, their traditions, the history that shaped who they are before anything else.⁣
⁣
That's part of who we're here to serve; our neighbors. Nationally, Hispanic and Latino people make up roughly 24% of the homeless population, and researchers believe even that number is too low, undercounted because so much of that need stays hidden instead of showing up in a shelter. That's why meeting someone where they are, instead of waiting for them to find us, matters as much as it does.⁣
⁣
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month to every neighbor, staff member, and volunteer carrying that heritage with them, today and every day after. ⁣
