Deep within Maddux Cemetery lies....
A Parasol Mushroom πŸ„
Parasol mushrooms (Macrolepiota procera) can be found from August-November across Appalachian woodlands and fields, wherever there is lots of nitrogen and organic matter.
The dead leaves, animals, and trees around Maddux Cemetery make a perfect home for these guys!

Parasol mushrooms are edible and often foraged. However they DO resemble other toxic mushrooms. This one is relatively young. As parasol mushrooms mature, their rounded egg shape and feathery scales branch out to a more umbrella-like shape. The stipe (the ring holding the cap up) also gradually loosens as it ages. The mushrooms are tall (4 to 12 in.) with brown or white caps, and their gills are typically white and close together.

Fun fact: Parasol Mushrooms often form fairy rings! They can grow in a circle in wooded areas, making them look quite magical.

A good tip to remember when foraging this fall: if you're not sure, DON'T eat it!!!

We have some very special visitors to the park! πŸ¦‹

This past week, Park staff have noticed Eastern Monarch cocoons around Harrison Bay. When these guys emerge, they will continue their fall migration to the oyamel fir forests of Central Mexico to wait out the winter.
