Over the last week, Ms. Frimmer’s students were busy working on ecosystems!🌎 Students created an animal from their imagination and made a brochure that included its habitat, niche, ecosystem, adaptations, and food web! They had the opportunity to bring in their animal’s “favorite snack” for the class to eat while they presented their brochure during an ecosystem party!

Why Are Kids Asked to Read FAKE Words?

Mip.

Lat.

Fep.

Those aren’t words.

So why would we ask a child to read them?

Because nonsense-word reading can help us see whether a child can actually apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to an unfamiliar word.

A child may recognize:

CAT

because they’ve seen CAT hundreds of times.

But what happens when we show them:

LAT?

Now they have to use the code:

/l/ /ă/ /t/

This is one way educators can gather information about a child’s ability to decode rather than relying only on memorized words.

Sometimes fake words tell us something very real about reading.
