Alcona County Library is partnering with Helen Hierta Ceramics to create a totem in the Reading Garden and Book Trail, behind the Harrisville Branch Library. The participants will help craft and apply designs to clay pieces that will transform into a sculptural stack of books.

The sculpture will be 7 feet tall, and will serve as a fundraiser for the Friends of Alcona County Library. Each entry is $150.00, you are welcome to purchase multiple entries or donate an entry for participation.

Each participant will be guided by ceramic artist Helen Hierta to create a part of this literary inspired totem. We have scheduled the Workshops for September 16, 2026 from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Harrisville Branch Library to plan the participant’s piece of the totem. October 13, 2026 from 12:00 pm-3:00 pm at the Ceramic studio, to craft one’s plan. Participants will come to a later workshop to glaze their works, and the sculpture will be installed at a later date.

The library is asking for your support; by spreading the word to potential participants, asking for donations and or sponsorships. Payment should be made by sending a check to “Friends of the Alcona County Library” or “FOACL” with totem in the memo line or use the QR code on the brochure.

Sincerely,
Denise Bearre
