PUBLIC SAFETY MILLAGE | WHAT WOULD IT COST YOU?

The proposed public safety millage is 2 mills, equal to $2 annually for every $1,000 of taxable property value.

For the average Hart homeowner, the estimated cost is:
$199 per year

That's approximately $16.58 per month.

Examples based on taxable value:
$50,000 = $100/year
$75,000 = $150/year
$100,000 = $200/year
$125,000 = $250/year
$150,000 = $300/year

Taxable value is not necessarily the same as market value. You can find your property's taxable value on your tax statement.

The proposal would authorize the millage for four years, 2027–2030.

PUBLIC SAFETY MILLAGE | WHY NOW?

Did you know the City of Hart has not asked voters for a millage increase since 2002?

Over the past 24 years, the costs of providing police, fire, and emergency response services—including personnel, vehicles, equipment, and facilities—have increased.

Today, Hart faces an estimated $230,000 annual General Fund budget shortfall.

On November 3, voters will consider a new, additional 2-mill public safety millage for four years, beginning in 2027.

The City is sharing information to help residents understand the proposal and its financial impact.

What does public safety look like in the City of Hart?

The City of Hart currently provides seven-day-a-week police and fire protection through:

🚓 6 full-time and 1 part-time police officers
🚒 Hart Area Fire Department
🚑 Medical First Responders

Annual police and fire expenditures total approximately $813,999.
City administration reports that current operations are at minimum staffing levels, with limited opportunities for further expenditure reductions without affecting services.

The proposed public safety millage for City residents on the November ballot would authorize additional dedicated funding for eligible police, fire, emergency response, equipment, personnel, and related operational needs.

We encourage you to review the full ballot information here: www.cityofhart.org
