I have been impressed by Pope Leo’s leadership around AI and the acknowledging the risks it poses to humanity. I am in full agreement here, and this is why I proposed a bill last session that would mandate all AI images be watermarked with a clear and legible symbol so people can easily see the image was a product of AI. Unfortunately it did not become law, but I plan to try again next year.

Today I wrote a letter to the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection in strong opposition of a plan that would allow Amazon to begin flying delivery drones out of their North Haven facility. Although this will not immediately impact Middletown, this plan is bad for our residents, the environment and migratory bird populations.

DEEP needs to approve the plan under the coastal management act to determine the impact on the ecosystem. These drones are large, loud and will undoubtedly impact our bird population at a bare minimum. For this reason I hope DEEP does not approve this plan.

Furthermore, these drones are a nuisance. Look up a video at how loud and obnoxious these things are. Then imagine one going to every house on your road once a day. That is the future if we don’t stop this. Beyond the noise, they are equipped with cameras that will be recorded the entire flight path creating privacy concerns.

I am strongly opposed to the use of these drones and growing increasingly concerned about the prevalent creep of constant monitoring we are coming under.

Several new laws go into effect today. An article is posted in the comments below detailing many of the changes. The most notable changes for most people will be the traffic law updates. The fines for passing a school bus have been increased, and repeat offenders will have their license suspended. The laws around distracted driving have changed, making it illegal to even hold your phone or have a screen playing motion pictures while driving. It is also now illegal to voluntarily release balloons into the air. Click the link in the comments to see all the changes.

25 years later we remember the lives lost on this day, the lives lost in the resulting wars, the brave first responders who put themselves in harms way and all of their families.

Today the State Bonding Commission approved $900k in funding I requested for permanent bathroom facilities equipped with plumbing and lights at Harbor, Butternut, and Smith Parks. Thanks Governor Ned Lamont for the investment!

Happy Labor Day! Let’s all remember that so many of the benefits we have as workers came from organized struggles and labor unions. The eight hour day, pensions, health benefits, retirement benefits, paid holidays and weekends were all fought and won by working people organizing and demanding them. They weren’t given to us by bosses or politicians, they were won by organized working people demanding better.

I support this! Kids need to learn how to think and interact socially. Using AI to solve problems for you is not going to build critical thinking skills and will actually diminish them.

Don’t forget to vote in the primary today if you’re registered as a Democrat. There is a primary election for Governor and Congress / State Senate depending on where you live in Middletown.

I am proud of our community for speaking out against Flock Safety at last nights common council meeting. This company is especially insidious, but I have grave concerns about the erosion of privacy these technologies cause to our society as a whole.
