“You matter.” This simple but powerful phrase struck Bridget Dawson, a freshman at Elon University, the first time she saw it at the House of Bread’s Education Center at 673 Maple Avenue. It stayed with her as she built and painted the Little Free Library she installed there last June. Now it’s a beautiful reminder to each person who walks by – and the theme of our 41st annual Hunger Banquet being held on November 18.

“I have always known that ‘Be Kind’ was the motto of the House of Bread, but I wanted to add another meaningful message to the project,” said Bridget, a West Hartford native. “The inspiration came from a sign I noticed at the Ed Center. I think it's such a beautiful, short, and sweet phrase that encapsulates a deeper meaning.”

Join us on November 18 at the Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church for our signature fundraiser that supports our mission of providing food, shelter, and education to thousands of Hartford residents. Help us show them that they matter, too.

A special delivery arrived last week from St. Mary's School in Simsbury thanks to Director of Admission, Toni Chagnon. Toni organized a collection of items from the SMS community so that on Grandparent’s Day, the students and their grandparents could participate in a service project together creating “blessing bags” for our guests. And what an amazing event they had - they ended up creating over 200 bags full of handy essentials like tissues, hand sanitizer, snacks, and encouraging handwritten notes! These gifts made all of our guests who received them feel cared for – is there a better blessing than that?!? Thank you for such a meaningful activity, for both the participants and those who benefited!

Thank you in advance, and we look forward to seeing you on November 18.

We spent lunchtime on this gorgeous Monday at UConn Health for their “Community Day”. The sun was shining on all the staff who came out for the .5k (much more realistic in the middle of a workday than an actual 5k - very clever!) and to learn more about some of the nonprofits in our community. We enjoyed participating alongside our friend Luis from Connecticut Foodshare. Thanks to all who stopped at our table for your interest and we hope to welcome you for a visit to HOB soon!

I scream, you scream, we at House of Bread scream “THANK YOU” to our volunteers from American Eagle Financial Credit Union who not only scooped ice cream, but they helped us to tackle countless tasks with ease and enthusiasm on their recent volunteer days. We are deeply grateful for their support.

In August, we served 48% more meals at our Soup Kitchen than we did in January. 48%! THAT is how we know that food insecurity is rising in Hartford, the capital of the richest state in the nation. Indeed, Connecticut Foodshare reports that 1 out of 4 Hartford neighbors is food insecure. During this HungerAction Month, we are especially grateful for our generous supporters, who help us to offer the dignity of a hot, nutritious meal to thousands of Hartford neighbors every day. Thank you!

We were happy to welcome this crew of young leaders from the Hartford PwC office in this past week. We appreciate that Jeff returned and coordinated a volunteer opportunity amidst his and his colleagues’ busy schedules in order to give back to the HOB community. Thank you for leading by example, Jeff, and know that we hope to see you all again soon!
