On Friday, October 9, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with the Consulate General of Peru in Hartford, who generously donated a collection of works by Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel Laureate in Literature, to the Hartford Public Library. We also screened the Peruvian film "Manco Cápac" with insights from producer Roberto Pazos.

It was a wonderful evening of culture, partnership, and community. Thank you to all who joined us!

On Thursday, October 8, we celebrated Banned Books Week with a film screening and a discussion regarding "The Librarians".

The powerful Emmy Award-winning documentary highlighted the growing challenges of book bans and censorship, while reminding us why libraries remain essential champions of intellectual freedom and access to information.

A special thank you to Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning producer Janique Robillard of “The Librarians,” and Co-chair of the Connecticut Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee, Samantha Lee, for sharing their insights and leading such a meaningful discussion on intellectual freedom, censorship, and Connecticut’s Freedom to Read law.

Thank you all for helping us celebrate Banned Books Week and for continuing to support every reader's right to explore ideas freely.

A glimpse of postwar Japan, brought into focus at the Digital Library Lab!

From fashion advertisements to illustrated sewing guides, the DLL helped historian Kim Brandt create publication-quality images from fragile Japanese books and magazines for her forthcoming book. These images provide evidence for her research on the role of design and fashion in international relations.

As Brandt explained, Many of the materials scanned for the project were produced for everyday use rather than long-term preservation. Mass-market magazines and other ephemera from Japan in the 1940s and 1950s can be particularly fragile because of poor-quality paper and the upheavals of war and military occupation.

In addition to supporting her research, creating high-quality digital reproductions allows these historically significant images to be shared without the need to handle the originals.
