It is with heavy hearts that Hartford Fire & Rescue announces the passing of our friend and department member, EMT Angie Pederson Hall, following her short and courageous battle with ALS.

Angie served the Hartford community as both an EMT and a teacher at Hartford Union High School. For those who worked alongside her, this loss is personal. We will remember her strength, her determination, and the “We Get To” attitude she shared even through the most difficult days.

In Angie’s spirit, “We Get To” face this immeasurable loss together! Our hearts are with Angie’s family, friends, former students, community, and everyone whose life she touched. Please join us in keeping them in your thoughts and respecting the family’s request for privacy as they grieve. Details about a Celebration of Life will be shared at a later date.

Rest easy, Angie. You will always be part of our Hartford Fire & Rescue family.

How often do you get the chance to cut apart a car AND take a piece of it home? That's exactly what our Joint Citizens Academy participants got to do last week!

The focus was on vehicle extrication, as participants learned how firefighters use our battery-operated HURST extrication tools to cut, spread, and remove parts of a vehicle to gain access to patients trapped following a crash.

After learning about the tools and techniques, everyone had the opportunity to get some hands-on experience and put those tools to work! By the end of the night, our training vehicle was in pieces, and everyone got to take home a piece of the car as a souvenir!

We're not sure how many people have a piece of a car sitting on their shelf at home, but our Citizens Academy participants can now say they earned theirs!

PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Saturday, October 17th, 2026
Fire Incident on Evergreen Drive

Hartford, WI – At approximately 12:59 A.M. on 10/17/2026, Hartford Fire & Rescue responded to the report of an apartment building on fire on Evergreen Drive. Multiple Hartford Police officers arrived on scene to find fire pushing out the front window of an apartment unit on the 1st floor. Officers quickly helped residents exit the building and attempted to search the 2nd floor, but were stopped by the thick black smoke. One officer utilized several fire extinguishers, spraying them through the front window in an attempt to slow the fire. Two officers went to the rear of the building, finding three occupants trapped on the 2nd floor balcony. Those occupants jumped from the smoke filled building and were caught by the officers at the rear of the building.

The first arriving fire incident commander called for additional mutual aid which was requested through MABAS Division 111 at the Working Still level. The first arriving Hartford fire engine found fire still pushing out of the front window on the 1st floor, rapidly extending up the exterior of the building and spreading to the unit above it and into the soffit and attic. The crew quickly deployed a preconnected hose line, briefly spraying water into the room that was on fire from the outside before entering the building. The growing fire was quickly located in the bedroom of the 1st floor apartment and extinguished. Hartford’s ladder truck arrived on scene and laddered the roof to check for fire. Another crew checked for fire in the apartment unit above the fire. Next arriving mutual aid engine crews provided assistance with extra personnel, searching the building, overhauling fire areas to assure no smoldering embers remained. A total of ten pets were successfully rescued from the apartment building.

EMS crews provided rehabilitation efforts to the firefighters, as well as staffing an ambulance on scene, and providing warming areas for those who were displaced. A total of twelve occupants were displaced from the 8-unit apartment building due to smoke and fire damage. One occupant had minor injuries, but refused transport to the hospital. Two Hartford police officers were evaluated at Aurora Medical Center Washginton County and released shortly there after for smoke related injuries. No fire or EMS personnel were injured during this incident.

Assistance was provided by the Washington County, Wisconsin Sheriff's Office with dispatch services, and Hartford Police Department with law enforcement assistance. Mutual Aid was provided by St. Lawrence Fire Company, Slinger Fire Department, Neosho Fire Department and Rescue, Richfield Fire Department, Jackson Fire Department. Lifestar EMS Wisconsin later provided an ambulance at Hartford’s fire station when Richfield’s ambulance was moved up to assist at the scene. American Red Cross of Wisconsin assisted with those who were displaced with immediate needs and assuring they had shelter. A temporary warming shelter was established in City of Hartford, Wis. City Hall for those occupants who were in need.

Mutual aid units were released as the work was completed, and Hartford Fire units remained on scene until approximately 4:00AM. Fire investigators from Hartford Fire and Hartford Police remained on scene until approximately 12:00PM. The cause of the fire is under investigation at the time of this press release, no further information is being released during the investigation

Would you know what to do to help restart someone's heart?

Today on , we are reminding everyone that knowing Hands-Only CPR can help save a life. It only takes a few minutes to learn the basics, and those few minutes could mean everything to someone suffering sudden cardiac arrest.

Last week was all about Fire Prevention. But that did not stop us from getting out of the Fire Station, and developing response plans. Full time staff met with Emergency Management, Diagnostic Imaging, and Hyperbaric staff at Aurora Medical Center Washington County. As part of Aurora's annual accreditation, we walked the facility to determine the capabilities of our local hospital, and the hazards hidden within.

The officers and command staff toured Quad Graphics, with a special emphasis on the fire protection features built within the 1.6 million sq. ft. facility. They gave special attention to understanding the layout and capabilities of the building construction, and the multiple Fire Pumps, Fire Sprinkler Systems, Fire Alarm System, Fire Doors, and Exhaust Systems.

Getting out and knowing the response area is key to making educated operational decisions to best affect the outcome in the event of an emergency.

Last Thursday, our Joint Citizens Academy got an up-close look at the Hartford Police Department's K-9 program! Participants learned how these highly trained dogs assist officers with narcotics detection, tracking, evidence searches, and suspect apprehension. They also witnessed demonstrations of the incredible teamwork between a K-9 and its handler.

But these dogs do much more than put on impressive demonstrations. Hartford's K-9 program has made a significant impact on public safety, both locally and throughout the region. K-9 Flash has assisted in major narcotics seizures, including the largest fentanyl bust in Washington County Metro Drug Unit history. His handler was recognized as Wisconsin's 2024 K-9 Handler of the Year! Alongside Flash, K-9 Ranger has contributed to narcotics investigations and tracking operations, further strengthening the department's ability to protect our community.

It's one thing to hear about the work these K-9 teams do, but seeing their training and capabilities firsthand gives our Citizens Academy participants a whole new appreciation for the skill, dedication, and trust that goes into these partnerships.

This week, our crews have been spending time with students and community members talking about fire prevention, what to do when the smoke alarm sounds, and how small choices at home can make a big difference.

We’re not done yet, either! Join us tomorrow, October 10 from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM at the Hartford Fire Station for our Annual Open House and help us wrap up Fire Prevention Week together.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
