As library staff, we love curating collections of materials and resources that address the wants and needs of our community-- and we also love fostering moments and experiences that are meaningful to our patrons! This week's Story from the Stacks highlights one of our most well-loved Youth Services programs, Cupcake Wars. One teen in particular stopped by the Circulation desk on her way out of the building to show us her cupcake creation, and to share how much fun she had at the program!

We love providing a space where teens, and patrons of all ages, can stop by to engage with what they love-- whether it be a new book, time on a computer, or an afternoon with friends decorating cupcakes. Our patrons are the reason we're here, and we are so grateful that we get to curate moments of joy, laughter, and a little friendly competition with decorated treats! 🧁

Every fall the same thing happens: the garden gives you more than you can eat, the farm stand has a deal you can't pass up, and then it all goes soft in the crisper drawer. This program is about fixing that!

Join us tomorrow, October 20 @ 6:00 pm as Chef Keegan Rodgers of The Lakehouse Bakery in Chelsea covers the practical side of home preservation β€” water bath canning for high-acid foods, refrigerator and quick pickles, jams and fruit butters, and what freezes well versus what turns to mush. He'll cover the equipment you actually need (less than you think), the food safety rules that are non-negotiable and why, how to read a tested recipe, and the common mistakes that cause a jar to fail. Visit Cromaine's online calendar to register for this fantastic program, and get ready to can, freeze, dry, and pickle to your heart's content as the weather gets colder!

In January of 1976, a small group of patrons banded together to form the Friends of Cromaine Library. In the fifty years that have followed, our library has been filled with moments of laughter, joy, learning, and connection! Today is the first day of National Friends of Libraries Week, and we want to take a moment to thank our amazing Friends of Cromaine for all of the magical moments they have created in our library over the years.

Their efforts in volunteerism, fundraising, and support have allowed for initiatives like the Summer Concert Series, Vintage Christmas, and our Summer Reading Kickoff parties. They have also supported our younger patrons in special ways, by helping to fund our sensory toys for little learners, K-4 Book Bags for our elementary-aged readers, and our annual Teen Scholarships for our incredible teens. We can’t imagine the Library without our Friends, and we are so grateful for all of the meaningful moments they’ve helped us create in the last fifty years!

Did you know that October is Fire Prevention Month?

As a part of Cromaine's Staff In-service on October 9, we discussed fire safety, held a brief fire drill, and practiced locating our nearest fire extinguishers and exits. Plus, we received a visit from the Parshallville Engine of Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority! Thank you to Sergeant and Community Risk Reduction Coordinator Melanie Bartley, and to Firefighter James Desentz, for their friendliness and expertise-- and, of course, for letting Community Engagement's Shelby hop in the firetruck! πŸš’
