🇺🇸 ALABAMA AMENDMENT 3: SHOULD THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND STUDENT-LED PRAYER BE PART OF THE STATE CONSTITUTION?

MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama voters will decide November 3 whether to add requirements concerning the Pledge of Allegiance and student-led prayer in public schools to the state Constitution.

Statewide Amendment 3 would require local school boards to adopt policies providing for the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each school day and authorizing student-initiated, student-led prayer.

The proposed amendment would apply to public K-12 schools across Alabama, including Hartselle City Schools, Morgan County Schools and Decatur City Schools.

🇺🇸 WHAT WOULD CHANGE?

Alabama already has a law requiring public schools to conduct the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the school day.

Amendment 3 would place that requirement in the Alabama Constitution, making it a constitutional obligation rather than solely a requirement under state law.

The amendment would also require school boards to establish policies allowing student-initiated and student-led prayer.

Importantly, the proposal would not require individual students to recite the pledge or participate in prayer. Students would retain their existing constitutional rights.

🗳️ WHAT DOES A YES OR NO VOTE MEAN?

A YES vote would amend the Alabama Constitution to require local school boards to adopt policies addressing the daily Pledge of Allegiance and permitting student-initiated, student-led prayer.

A NO vote would leave the Alabama Constitution unchanged. Existing state laws and constitutional protections would remain in place.

The proposal originated with House Bill 511, sponsored by Rep. Reed Ingram, R-Pike Road, during the 2026 legislative session.

📍 WHAT WOULD THIS MEAN FOR HARTSELLE AND MORGAN COUNTY?

If approved, Amendment 3 would require local boards of education to ensure their policies meet the new constitutional requirements.

For schools already conducting the pledge each morning, the most noticeable change could be the constitutional status of that requirement.

Schools would also need policies explicitly permitting student-initiated, student-led prayer while respecting students' rights not to participate.

The amendment would not authorize mandatory student prayer.

💬 THE QUESTION FOR VOTERS

Supporters of the proposal emphasize establishing the pledge and student-led prayer protections in the state Constitution. A central question for voters is whether these provisions need constitutional protection when existing law already addresses the pledge and students already have the right to engage in voluntary prayer.

Should these requirements be written into Alabama's Constitution, or should they remain governed by existing laws and school policies?

🇺🇸 ALABAMA VOTERS TO DECIDE WHETHER NATIONAL ANTHEM SHOULD BE REQUIRED WEEKLY IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

MONTGOMERY, AL — Should Alabama's public schools be required to play or perform the national anthem at least once every week?

That question will be decided by voters on November 3, 2026, when Statewide Amendment 4 appears on the general election ballot.

The proposed constitutional amendment would require every public K-12 school in Alabama to broadcast or approve a performance of the first stanza of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at least once per week during school hours.

The requirement would apply statewide, including schools in Hartselle, Decatur and throughout Morgan County.

🇺🇸 WHAT WOULD AMENDMENT 4 REQUIRE?

If approved, local school boards would be required to adopt policies ensuring the national anthem is played or performed weekly during the school day.

Schools could satisfy the requirement through a broadcast or a school-approved live performance, including a band, choir, vocal group or soloist.

The proposal would establish a statewide minimum requirement rather than leaving the decision entirely to individual school systems.

The amendment originated with Senate Bill 5, sponsored by Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale. It passed the Alabama Senate 22-5 and the House of Representatives 75-27 during the 2026 legislative session.

🗳️ WHAT DOES A YES OR NO VOTE MEAN?

A YES vote would amend Alabama's Constitution to require public K-12 schools to broadcast or allow an approved performance of the national anthem's first stanza at least once each week during school hours.

A NO vote would leave the Constitution unchanged, without establishing the proposed statewide requirement.

According to the Alabama Fair Ballot Commission, the amendment would not create any new taxes or costs.

📍 WHAT WOULD THIS MEAN FOR HARTSELLE?

If Amendment 4 passes, the Hartselle City Schools Board of Education, along with other local school boards, would be required to adopt a policy meeting the new statewide standard.

Schools already playing the national anthem regularly could continue doing so, provided their practices satisfy the constitutional requirement.

The proposal does not specify that every student must sing or participate. Its stated requirement concerns the school's weekly broadcast or approved performance.

🇺🇸 WHY IS THIS ON THE BALLOT?

Alabama lawmakers approved legislation proposing the constitutional amendment earlier this year, but the Legislature cannot enact this particular constitutional change on its own.

Voters must approve the proposal by a simple majority for it to become part of the Alabama Constitution.

Statewide Amendment 4 is one of four constitutional amendments scheduled for the November 3 general election.

Whether voters believe the national anthem should be a constitutional requirement or a decision left to local school boards is among the questions raised by the proposal.

💬 WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Should Alabama require every public school to play or perform the national anthem at least once each week, or should that decision remain with individual school systems?

BREAKING: Multiple people reportedly shot near Legion Field in Birmingham after 85th annual the Magic City Classic.

From ABC 33/40 concerning the situation at Legion Field last night. The photos are from my long-time colleague Bill Castle, the chief photographer.

*Birmingham police are investigating a mass shooting just outside Legion Field in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West.

*Gunfire was reported shortly after 7:50 p.m. Saturday, after the Magic City Classic football game.

*Nine people were shot: one person was killed, one is in critical condition and seven are in stable condition, according to Police Chief Michael Pickett.

*One person was detained and taken to police headquarters for processing.

*Police have not announced charges.

*Officers recovered multiple fi****ms from the scene.

*Pickett said most spectators and families had left the stadium property after the game. The shooting happened in the nearby area where vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue.

*BPD suspended tailgating and told people to leave Legion Field property. The department is asking the public to share video and says submissions will remain anonymous.

*BPD is working with the FBI and partner agencies. It did not take questions at the news conference.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin made this statement

“Our community is hurt, shaken and rightfully angry. So am I.

There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration. But hear me clearly: We refuse to let fear shake the spirit of this community. Justice will be served to those who brought harm to those at one of our most treasured events.

The Magic City Classic is rooted in HBCU tradition, and at the heart of those traditions is family. Tonight, as a family, we grieve. We wrap our arms around neighbors who are dealing with unimaginable pain right now. And just like family, we will stand united as we overcome this tragic night.

While this crime is under an active investigation, we will not let up until we achieve swift justice for this senseless violence.”
