Don't Forget! Hydrant flushing starts today! But not the kind pictured!

Our friends over at the Utility Department will be out in the next couple weeks conducting semi-annual fire hydrant flushing to clear mineral deposits, maintain optimal water quality, and verify proper operation of the system. The hydrants will typically be ran with an operator near by, but sometimes may be left unattended while attempting to do a complete flush.

Crews will focus on flushing dead-end hydrants and mains. Operations will follow the schedule outlined below:

Flushing Schedule

•This Week: Crews will start on the North side of town and begin working their way south.

•Next Week: Crews will continue moving systematically from the central areas down to the South side of town.

What Residents Need to Know

While flushing is underway, your water service will not be disrupted. However, you may experience temporary water discoloration or fluctuating pressure. This is a normal byproduct of stirring up natural sediment in the pipes and poses no threat to your health.
To minimize any issues, please follow these tips:

•Avoid Laundry and High-Water Use: Do not wash clothes or run your dishwasher if you see crews flushing on your street. Discolored water can permanently stain laundry.

•Clear Your Lines: If you experience discolored water, turn off your tap and wait a few minutes. Then, run a cold water faucet (preferably a basement or first-floor tap closest to your water meter) for 5 to 10 minutes until the water runs completely clear.

•Drive Safely: If you see water utility operators working in the streets, please drive carefully and give them plenty of space to operate.

If you have any questions concerning hydrant flushing, please call 815-943-2046 ext. 203

'Tis the season! 🍂🍁

While our Public Works crew has been busy with brush pickup, MDC Environmental Services will be hitting the streets this week to begin fall leaf collection!

A few things to keep in mind:

Don't wait until your scheduled collection week to get your leaves out! Rake leaves out as early and as often as possible. Collection crews may get ahead of or fall behind schedule depending on leaf volume and weather conditions.

Please rake leaves to the back of the curb, within the public right-of-way, and NOT into the street.

Tentative Leaf Collection Schedule:

🍂 Now through the end of October: MDC will be making quick passes throughout the entire City while leaf volumes are still relatively light.

🍂 Week of November 2: East side of Route 14, moving west if time allows.

🍂 Week of November 9: West side of Route 14.

🍂 November 16: Beginning another pass on the east side.

🍂 Week of November 23: West side of Route 14.

🍂 Week of November 30: Last call! Crews will be working throughout the City collecting remaining leaf piles.

Remember, this schedule is tentative! Pickup depends on the amount of leaves and weather conditions. A hard freeze or snowfall can halt pickup unless temperatures warm enough for operations to resume.

The best way to make sure your leaves get picked up is to get them out early rather than waiting for the crews to come through your neighborhood.

Hear ye, hear ye, bring out yer brush!

Tomorrow, October 12th, we begin fall brush collection for 2026.

I always have the staff drive the complete City, including all side streets and dead-ends, so if it is out, it will be collected. If you wait until you see us pass, or got woke up by the chipper at the neighbor's house, you will have to wait until May, so take advantage of the nice weather!

To be sure your brush is removed, please have all branches by the curb before pickup begins, but no earlier than one week ahead of time. The longer the better when it comes to branch length. Please stack branches with the cut end to the street. Stumps, bushes, plants, leaves or weeds will not be picked up by the City. The time limit for brush piles is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes the resident is charged $125.00 an hour with a minimum charge of $50.00.
