The Town of Islip shared information to help residents prepare for the Nor’easter.
Nor'easter to Bring Strong Winds and Rain... Possible Flooding Expected Today Through Monday
Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, members of the Islip Town Board and Town officials, are advising residents that a significant Nor’easter is forecasted to impact our area starting tonight, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and potentially hazardous conditions. A Coastal Flood Advisory, Coastal Flood Warning, and extended High Rip Current Risk are currently in effect.
High winds could topple trees and cause downed branches resulting in power outages. If you see a downed wire, assume it is LIVE; don't touch it or a nearby fence or tree limb. Move away from any downed wire and call 1-800-490-0075.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects. Avoid being around trees and branches. Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm and avoid windows. If travel is necessary, use caution and allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
It is likely that there may be moderate coastal flooding. Take immediate precautions to ensure your boats are properly secured. If conditions allow, verify that your vessel is not taking on water and confirm that all bilge pumps are functioning throughout the duration of the storm. Additionally, ensure that all covers, canvas, and loose items are tightly fastened or removed to prevent damage or loss in high winds. For anyone who has flights scheduled through MacArthur Airport, please call (631) 467-3300 to learn more about possible delays.
The Fire Island ferry will not be offering any service on Saturday, September 26th. The last boat will leave the dock at 6:00pm Friday, September 25th.
All Town Parks and Beaches are closed. Holbrook, Brentwood, and Gull Haven Golf Courses will also be closed.
High rip current risk also remains in effect. Life-threatening rip currents are likely for anyone entering the surf zone. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
