Tick season is here! Be AWARE = Avoid, Wear, Apply, Remove and Examine!

Ticks can spread a variety of bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Each year Reno County has a few cases of tickborne illnesses, such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and tularemia. Symptoms generally include fever/chills, aches/pains, rashes, and can be fatal if not treated properly. Protect yourself from tick bites by being AWARE, making sure to wear long pants and sleeves and applying EPA-approved tick repellent when outdoors. Also check your pets for ticks to reduce potential exposures! For more information visit https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/index.html

We will refrain from a siren test today since we've had such fun weather lately. Is that OK? So to be clear, NO SIREN TEST TODAY!

Once the fields dry, harvest will resume or commence. Either way, you will see increased farm equipment on the roads. BE SAFE!

đźšś 1. Watch for Slow-Moving Vehicles
-Farm equipment often travels under 25 mph.

-Be patient and avoid sudden lane changes.

-Look for Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) triangle signs (orange triangle with red border).

2. Keep a Safe Following Distance
-Tailgating large machinery is dangerous—visibility is limited, and the stopping distance is long.

-Allow at least 50 feet behind combines, tractors, or grain trucks.

3. Pass With Caution
Only pass when:

-You can clearly see ahead.

-The vehicle is not turning left (many farm vehicles turn wide).

-Use extra care near field entrances and rural driveways.

4. Be Alert During Peak Hours
-Early morning and evening (sunrise/sunset) are peak harvest times.

-Glare from the sun can impair visibility—use polarized sunglasses and clean windshields.

5. Expect Unexpected Stops or Turns
-Farm vehicles frequently slow or stop suddenly to enter fields.

-Always use turn signals early and expect sudden lane movements from machinery.

6. Share the Road Courteously
-Farmers are working long hours—stress and fatigue are common.

-A wave or a smile goes a long way in rural communities.

7. Stay Off Phones & Avoid Distractions
-Rural roads require 100% attention—phones, food, or multitasking can wait.

8. For Farmers: Light It Up
-Use flashing lights, reflectors, and es**rt vehicles when transporting equipment.

-Ensure SMV signs are clean and visible.

9. Be Prepared for the Unexpected
-Loose gravel, soft shoulders, or animals crossing are common.

-Drive defensively and always be ready to react.

If you're curious about Juneteenth and what it is: "Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday." https://www.history.com/articles/what-is-juneteenth

The City Office will be closed, Thursday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth. Trash service will not be affected. Office will re-open Friday, June 20th.

Because their PR team is better, we share their post, but we agree!!

We shouldn’t have to say this, but clearly, we do:
If you come across a road covered in water — DON’T CHANCE IT, TURN AROUND!

Every time it floods, someone thinks they can make it. That water may be deeper and faster-moving than it looks. It’s not brave. It’s not smart. It’s not worth it.

06/18/2025

*** WARNING ***
Water is across the road, just north of Haven and Greenfield. The township is aware. Avoid the area for now if possible.

06/18/2025

*** WEATHER UPDATE ***

A severe thunderstorm WARNING remains in effect until 915. Storms continue to produce large hail and damaging winds.

—edit—
The severe thunderstorm warning was allowed to expire for Haven proper, but we are keeping on eye on some areas of hail to our south and west.

Remain weather aware. Stay vigilant.
