This Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor and celebrate the legacy of Sandra Cisneros Sandra Cisneros) — author, activist, and one of the most powerful voices in American literature. 🌹💙
Sandra grew up moving constantly between Chicago and Mexico City, never quite feeling settled, and longing for a place that was truly hers. That longing became The House on Mango Street — a love letter to every young person who has ever dreamed of a home that reflects who they are. She dedicated her career to telling the stories of people the world too often overlooked — low-income Latino communities, women, people living on the margins — and to making them feel seen, heard, and valued.
The Hispanic community has long understood that home is more than a place — it is where culture lives, where family gathers, and where identity is rooted. That belief is something we share deeply.
Her work feels close to everything we do at A Sense of Home.
Like Sandra, we believe that a home is more than four walls. It is identity, stability, and the foundation from which a person can finally begin to grow. Many of the young people we serve share Sandra’s experience of moving constantly, of never feeling fully rooted, of longing for a space that is truly their own. When our recipients walk into their first home, they don’t just receive furniture — they get to choose it. They get to make decisions about their space, their style, and their story.
And like Sandra, we believe that community is everything. That we rise together. That belonging is not a privilege — it is a right. 💙
