Elevator emergencies present unique challenges for both occupants and first responders. Michael will introduce the 11-Step Initial Response Procedures, a systematic approach to assessing elevator incidents, communicating with trapped passengers, stabilizing conditions, and minimizing additional hazards.

Through discussion and scenario-based training, attendees will strengthen their decision-making and gain practical strategies for safer, more effective elevator rescue operations.

📻 BEFORE YOU KEY THAT RADIO, LOOK WHERE YOU’RE STANDING.

That warning label isn’t there to dress up the controller.

It says to keep the controller doors closed while the elevator is in service, and warns that stray radio transmissions may affect ride quality, for a reason.

This is why I stress it in class: don’t stand in front of an elevator controller transmitting your radio message.

When conditions allow, step outside the machine room to transmit. Keep controller doors closed and follow the equipment manufacturer’s guidance and your department’s communication procedures.

If you need to communicate immediately, don’t delay an urgent message. Keep the controller doors closed, and move away from the controller when conditions allow. Don’t rely on turning your back or covering the microphone to prevent interference. But, doing all things mentioned above, will make things better.

Remember the controller doors: “Close it up…before you key it up!”

Read the labels. Know the equipment. Think before you key the mic.

⚠️ “SOMEBODY SHOWED ME ONCE” IS NOT TRAINING.

This is the aftermath of a roped hydraulic elevator that was racked and then manually lowered.

A dangerous condition. Thousands of dollars in repairs. A reminder that knowing how to lower an elevator means more than knowing where the valve is.

If your training came “through the grapevine,” or from somebody without elevator industry experience, stop right there.

You need to understand the equipment, recognize when something is wrong, and know when manual lowering is inappropriate.

“It worked last time” doesn’t tell you whether it’s safe this time.

Get proper training from qualified instructors with elevator industry experience. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your department’s procedures. When the equipment is compromised, stop and involve a qualified elevator mechanic.

The people in that car, and your crew, are counting on informed decisions.

⚠️ SEE THESE TWO ORANGE LABELS? START WITH THE ONE ON THE RIGHT.

“REMEMBER TO LOCK & TAG OUT.”

Properly isolating and locking out the elevator’s power protects against powered movement, even if somebody left a jumper behind.

Don’t assume the safety circuits will protect you. Follow your department’s LOTO procedures and verify isolation.

The label on the left says, “LEAVE NO JUMPERS.”

You don’t know what the elevator mechanic left behind. That’s why the label on the right matters.

Control the power. Don’t rely on assumptions. Stored energy and other movement hazards still need to be addressed.

🛗 SAME DOORS. DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN?

You show up to a stalled occupied elevator. Closed hoistway doors. People inside.

What are you dealing with? Hydraulic? Traction? Where’s the machinery? Is there even a machine room?

“Looks like the one we had last week” isn’t going to cut it.

Those doors aren’t telling you the whole story. You need to know what you’re working with before you start making decisions.

Me? I want those answers during PREPLANNING. Walk the building. Identify the equipment. Locate the disconnects. Find out what keys you need and make sure you can get where you need to go. PDS- Preplan/Docunent/Share.

The emergency is a lousy time to find out nobody has the key.

Now let’s hear from the elevator mechanics and firefighters. Without opening the hoistway door, what do you look for to identify the elevator type, and how do you verify it?

Share your experience. Somebody reading this might learn something they can use on their next run.
