🇺🇸 October 26 — National Day of the Deployed

Today, we recognize the men and women serving our nation far from home.

The Day of the Deployed, observed each year on October 26, honors the service members currently deployed around the world and the families who remain behind, carrying responsibilities and making sacrifices of their own.

Deployment means missed birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, first steps, graduations, and countless ordinary moments most of us take for granted.

It means long days and longer nights.

It means families watching the calendar, waiting for a phone call or message, and counting down the days until someone they love comes home.

For our deployed service members, it means answering the call wherever that call takes them—aboard ships at sea, at bases overseas, in combat zones, and in places most Americans will never see.

For veterans, today may also bring back memories of their own deployments: the people they served beside, the places they went, and the families who waited for them at home.

Today, we simply want our deployed service members and their families to know:

We see you.
We appreciate you.
We are thinking of you.
And we look forward to welcoming you home.

Until every deployment ends and every homecoming arrives, thank you for standing the watch.

Drop the name of someone you know that is deployed.

🇺🇸 October 25 — Remembering Operation Urgent Fury

On October 25, 1983, American forces landed on the Caribbean island of Grenada, beginning Operation Urgent Fury.

The mission followed a period of political upheaval and violence in Grenada and concerns for the safety of hundreds of American citizens, many of them medical students, on the island.

Nearly 8,000 U.S. service members participated in the operation, including Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen. The campaign brought together conventional forces and special operations units in difficult and, at times, chaotic combat conditions.

The major combat phase was brief, but the cost was real.

Nineteen American service members were killed and more than 100 were wounded.

For those who served there, Grenada was not simply a short military operation tucked between larger chapters of American history. They deployed, fought, lost friends and fellow service members, and accomplished their mission.

Today, on the anniversary of Operation Urgent Fury, we pause to remember them.

We honor the Americans who served.

We remember the 19 who did not come home.

And we recognize our Grenada veterans whose service is an important part of our nation’s military history.

To our Operation Urgent Fury veterans: your service and sacrifice are remembered.

On October 23, 1983, 241 U.S. service members were killed in the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut: 220 Marines, 18 sailors and 3 soldiers.

They went to keep the peace, and they never came home.

Today we hold their names and their families close.

We remember every one of them.
