Virgil Hart—Hayward High’s football coach, women’s head basketball coach, and SEL counselor—has been named one of two inaugural Bay Area winners of the Coach Beam Service Award.

The award honors coaches who “lead with heart, purpose and community to transform the lives of student-athletes.”
Virgil has led the football team to a successful record. But he is also well-known for building strong connections to students, and puts an emphasis on academics, mental health, leadership, and personal growth.

One award nominator wrote: “He is committed to developing well-rounded young people who are prepared for life’s challenges.”

The award is bestowed by the Coach Beam’s Legacy Foundation, which was established by the Beam family to honor the life and values of Coach John Beam—a legendary East Bay high school and college coach who passed away tragically last year.

Virgil received the award at a recent Oakland Ballers game. He is shown here with Coach Beam’s two daughters.

Winners receive an individual $7,500 stipend and a $5,000 grant for their athletic program.

So this guy showed up at Schafer Park Elementary today to help kick off the school year. Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom brightened the day of the Schafer Park community with a tour of the school that included visits to second-grade and TK classrooms, an interview with two second-graders, and an informative conversation with the food services staff. (The governor’s favorite food, the two second-graders learned, is spaghetti.) In addition to practicing his puzzle-solving skills, Newsom discussed his commitment to public education, including transitional kindergarten and community schools, two areas that have been growing at HUSD. Thank you, Governor and First Partner for your visit. Come back anytime!

Another Backpack Giveaway event is in the books! Thank you to all the donors, community partners, elected officials, HUSD staff, volunteers, and everyone else who gave their time and energy to make this more than just a backpack giveaway, but a community-wide celebration. It gets better every year. Our students are now ready to be launched into the new year!

Calling all athletes…this Saturday at Tennyson High

Are there more animals in the world *with* vertebrae or *without?* Sure, you Google the answer. But you could also ask one of our migrant education summer students, who enjoyed a visit from one of H.A.R.D.’s amazing staffers from the Sulphur Creek Nature Center. Everything you wanted to know about vertebrates and invertebrates in one super engaging lesson. (And since you are dying to know, there are more invertebrates than there are vertebrates in the world.)
