This week I participated in two ground breaking events (figuratively and literally) that will benefit Hayward significantly. These are multimillion dollar projects that will make Hayward safer. The great part of this week was to see and meet one of the principals responsible for the planning, funding, and building of the projects. Caltrans District 4 Director Doanh Nguyen is a Hayward native, educated in Hayward schools, Hayward High alumnus, and a Chabot College transfer student. From local municipal government to regional transportation planning, funding, and building Hayward is leading the region. It was great meeting you Mr. Nguyen! 🚌🚙🚚🚲🏍️🛵🛴🏡🛣️🚧🚦🚥

Great News for Hayward! Wrapping up an exciting week of major transportation investments and projects that will make Hayward and our neighboring cities safer and better connected. Today, I joined California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, California Highway Patrol Deputy Commissioner Ezery Beauchamp, California Office of Traffic Safety representative Stephanie Dougherty, Alameda County Transportation Commission Executive Director Tony Tavares, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Area Director Natasha Thomas, and Caltrans District 4 Director Doanh Nguyen to launch the State Priority Safety Corridor Project. This is a major investment in freeway safety, and Hayward will be a significant beneficiary. The project will focus on the Interstate 880 corridor between San Leandro and Union City, with a substantial portion running directly through Hayward. Improvements will focus on roadway safety, traffic engineering, safer pedestrian crossings, and other measures designed to reduce collisions, prevent injuries, and save lives. Even better, this will be the FIRST State Priority Safety Corridor project in the Bay Area. Today's message was clear: Making our freeways safer requires all of us working together. Our strategy is built around four important principles: Engineering: Designing safer roads and improving infrastructure; Education: Helping drivers and communities understand roadway safety. Enforcement: Strengthening traffic safety and accountability: and Engagement: Bringing everyone together to make safety a shared responsibility. This is what successful regional partnerships look like. When state, regional, county, and local agencies work together, we bring important investments into our communities and deliver meaningful improvements for our residents. As Mayor of Hayward and a member of the Alameda County Transportation Commission, I am proud to be part of these partnerships and to help advance projects that directly benefit our city. Safer freeways. Safer roads. Safer neighborhoods. That's how we build a better Hayward!

DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!

Today, Hayward joins communities across California and the nation for the Great ShakeOut! Living in earthquake country means being prepared. Earthquake safety begins with awareness, education, and knowing what to do when the ground starts shaking. A big THANK YOU to the Hayward Fire Department for hosting a fantastic earthquake preparedness event at City Hall today. One of our most important responsibilities is keeping our neighborhoods safe, and that starts with making sure families, children, and neighbors have the knowledge and tools they need to prepare for an emergency. Prepared neighborhoods are safer neighborhoods. I encourage every Hayward neighbor to learn more about earthquake preparedness, emergency response, and how to get involved in our City’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. Learn more: Visit the City of Hayward’s CERT website.

A $200 Million Regional Investment and Hayward Is Part of It! Today was an exciting day for Hayward and our East Bay neighbors. Serving in two important roles—as Mayor of Hayward and Commissioner on the Alameda County Transportation Commission (ACTC)—I was proud to participate in the groundbreaking of the $200 million East Bay Greenway Project in San Leandro! So, what does this major investment mean for Hayward? It means our city will benefit from a larger, more connected regional transportation network stretching from Oakland through San Leandro, Ashland, and Cherryland into Hayward. For Hayward residents, the benefits include safer and more accessible transportation connections, improved opportunities for walking and bicycling, and better access to public transit. The project will also help connect our neighborhoods to employment centers, schools, businesses, and destinations throughout the East Bay. This is about more than transportation. It's about connecting Hayward families to opportunities throughout our region!. This is what successful representation looks like when we work with regional partners: bringing major investments to our communities, making sure Hayward is included in regional planning, and delivering infrastructure that benefits our residents for generations. I want to thank ACTC, the Federal Highway Administration, California Transportation Commission, Caltrans, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Alameda County, and the cities of Oakland and San Leandro for their partnership. As Mayor and an ACTC Commissioner, I am proud to help advance projects that strengthen Hayward's connections to the entire East Bay. For more information, visit www.alamedactc.org.

Last night, I joined Alameda County Supervisors David Haubert and Elisa Márquez, Public Health Director Aneeka Choudhry, and my good friends and colleagues Mayors Raj Salwan (Fremont), Michael Hannon (Newark), and Gary Singh (Union City) for a screening of Beyond the Bridge in Fremont.

Following the film, we joined housing experts for an important conversation about the work our cities are doing to address homelessness across Alameda County.

Three important takeaways: Addressing homelessness requires strong regional partnerships, supportive housing must go hand in hand with supportive services, and lasting solutions require sustained commitment and coordination.

That is exactly the work we have been doing in Hayward, and we are seeing meaningful results!

We know that homelessness cannot be solved by any one city working alone. It takes partnerships, investments, accountability, and a shared commitment to helping people move into stable housing.

It was a great evening of thoughtful discussion and collaboration. I’m proud of the progress we are making in Hayward, grateful for our regional partners, and committed to continuing this important work.

Our work continues, and together, we are making a difference! Great Job to Fremont Council Member Kathy Kimberlin for putting this together.

Public safety is one of the most important responsibilities of a Mayor. Every family, every child, and every neighborhood deserves to feel safe and secure. I am proud to announce that the Hayward Police Officers’ Association (HPOA) has endorsed our campaign! I am equally proud to announce the endorsements of two retired Hayward Police Chiefs, Mark Koller and Toney Chaplin. Throughout my years on the Hayward City Council and as Mayor, I have worked closely with our Police Chiefs and police officers to strengthen community policing, protect the rights of immigrants, improve accountability, advance meaningful reforms, and support innovative police shift structures and neighborhood beat assignments. Public safety, accountability, and reform are not competing priorities. They can and must work together. Achieving these goals requires trust, strong working relationships, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to the neighborhoods we serve. I am proud to represent a city where our public safety professionals embrace innovation, recognize the importance of accountability, and remain committed to protecting our neighborhoods. As Mayor, my responsibility is clear: Deliver effective public safety services, build trust between our police officers and the community, and make sure every Hayward neighborhood is a safe place to live and work. Thank you to the Hayward Police Officers’ Association, retired Chief Mark Koller, and retired Chief Toney Chaplin for your endorsements and support.

I’m proud and grateful to announce that the South Alameda County Young Democrats have endorsed our campaign for Mayor of Hayward! Our message is resonating across Hayward: Strong neighborhoods begin with great schools, pathways to college, good-paying jobs, economic opportunity, and housing for families at every income level.

I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished to expand housing opportunities, protect tenants, help first-time homebuyers achieve their piece of the American Dream, and create seamless pathways from our schools to college, graduation, and high-quality careers. These are more than campaign promises. They are priorities I have worked to turn into real progress for Hayward families. And we’re not finished! Together, we will continue building a city where young people can succeed, working families can prosper, seniors can live with dignity, and future generations can afford to call Hayward home. Great cities start with great neighborhoods, and great neighborhoods create opportunities for everyone!

Thank you to the South Alameda County Young Democrats for your confidence, trust, and endorsement. I look forward to continuing this important work together!
