08/25/2026

We’re gearing up for our Firefighters Softball Tournament and are still looking for some great businesses and individuals to help make this event a success!

We’re looking for local businesses and community members who would like to sponsor the tournament and support our firefighters.

We’re also looking for umpires willing to work the tournament. If you’re an experienced softball umpire or know someone who is, we’d love to hear from you!

Today marks the anniversary of the Terminal 1 fire on June 15, 1975.

On that day, two KCAB firefighters, Thomas “Tom” Zaferes and Donald “Don” Phillips, lost their lives while searching for potential victims on the second floor of the KCAB administrative area. Their bravery, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten.

As we do each year, wreaths have been laid and flags have been lowered to half-staff at each firehouse in honor of these two brave men. Please keep Firefighters Zaferes and Phillips, along with their families, in your thoughts today.

In their memory, a scholarship was set up to support students pursuing education in fire science or emergency medical services at select universities.

Today, and every year on this day, we remember and honor their sacrifice.
