Montana Public Service Commission: More than Rates. (Link to 2-minute video below).

Most people know the PSC for utility bills. But our rail safety inspectors are also out on Montana's railroads, checking locomotives, freight cars, track and the crews who run the trains.

In 2025, the Legislature doubled the team from 2 inspectors to 4. The full team worked only the last three months of the year, and for the first time it checked track safety and crew operations too. Even so, inspectors found about 3,100 defects, up from about 1,800 in 2023. Railroads must correct every defect we find, just as they must for the Federal Railroad Administration.

With four inspectors working all year, we project about 5,000 defects found in 2026.

Increasing Safety One Inspection at a Time. A team that's grown, and it has shown.
