Baxendale Fire would like to thank our mutual aid partners for their assistance on our structure fire early this morning past the town of Rimini. West Valley Fire sent an engine, a tender and management staff. Marysville, East Valley, Canyon Creek sent tenders and a cascade trailer. We appreciate you all very much! Mutual Aid partnerships are so important with the distance our fire departments have to protect.

Today is the day! Bring your appetite! See you soon!

Last night at approximately midnight, West Valley Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire. First arriving crews encountered heavy fire conditions and quickly requested mutual aid from surrounding fire departments.

Unfortunately, the property was a complete loss. Thankfully, there were no injuries and everyone was safely out of the home before crews arrived. Firefighters remain on scene this morning monitoring the area and mopping up remaining hot spots.

A huge thank you to Baxendale Volunteer Fire Department, Tri-Lakes Volunteer Fire Department, East Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Montana City Volunteer Fire Department, Clancy Volunteer Fire Department, Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department, Marysville Volunteer Fire Department, Helena Fire Department, VA Fire Department, Lewis and Clark Sheriff’s Office, and NorthWestern Energy for responding and helping bring the incident safely under control.

🔥Wildfire Update 5/24🔥

🔥Jericho Creek- Helena Ranger District. The fire remains at approximately 1,000 acres.

Strategic firing operations are planned to occur on the fire today, as crews continue the process of burning fuels between the uncontrolled fire edge and constructed indirect control lines. Depending on conditions, firing operations may continue into tomorrow.

Smoke will be visible from Highway 12, northern Jefferson County, and the Helena area.

Resources assigned to the fire include two hotshot crews, one dozer, two masticators, one excavator, one skidgine, one water tender, two engines, three suppression modules, and a Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) module.

No closures are in effect, but the public is asked to avoid the fire area and the Continental Divide area south of MacDonald Pass to Minnehaha/Bryon Creek Road.

FIre information can also be found at https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/mthlf-jericho-creek.

The following information is from Kathy Bushnell, United States Forest Service. (USFS) May 22, 2026

The US Forest Service has transitioned to a Type 3 organization for the Jericho Creek Fire (west of Helena Mt.) to get more resources in preparation of the opportunity to do a burnout operation over the weekend. The fire has not moved, some activity within the perimeter, we continue to build containment lines around it.

Updated information for May 24, 2026.

We are a Go for the burnout operations that will be done mostly by the UAS--so this afternoon, if you're around the area, you'll see a lot of smoke. Depending on how today goes we may continue firing operations tomorrow.

The whole area we're burning has containment lines and natural features as containment; a segment has a defined secondary line as well.

We have 80-ish people on the fire, some heavy equipment and a helicopter on standby.

Today the smoke will make this fire visible and since it's been quiet to-date people may think it's new--we are updating Facebook and Inciweb today too.
Thanks!
Kathy Bushnell, USFS.
