From smartphones and tablets to laptops, scooters and e-bikes, rechargeable devices have become a part of everyday life. This year’s Fire Prevention Week focuses on lithium-ion battery safety. These batteries are found in electric scooters, laptops, phones, toys, electric tools and other products. There are many benefits to these batteries including storing lots of energy in a small amount of space.

Safety Points:
• Safety starts by only using the products recommended cords and batteries.
• Charge batteries on flat surfaces away from any flammable products in ventilated area.
• Unplug the battery once it is fully charged
• When the battery has completed its useful life, dispose of it properly. The city’s transfer station has a battery recycling program which includes lithium ion batteries.

If you see these batteries start to smoke, back away quickly, and call 911.

Fire Prevention Week is in full swing teaching fire safety to over 400, 2nd graders!

We’re teaching the real-deal fire safety skills: having an evacuation plan, when to call for help, crawl low when getting out and Stop, Drop & Roll.

Kids also get to watch a firefighter gear up so they know not to run away or hid if we have to come and rescue them.

We are proud of all of our new fire-safety pros!

Do you have what it takes to be a firefighter?

The minimum requirements to apply for the Helena Fire Department is a valid CPAT and an EMT. The CPAT is a physical agility test with 8 different skills in which a firefighter will encounter during fire operations. Montana's CPAT usually only comes around once a year. We still accept all other validation CPATs, but this one will be the closest. Testing Dates are the 12th and 13th. If you have never done it before, make sure you watch the videos and practice!

The Helena Fire Department will be doing a smoke alarm canvas between the railroad and Cedar Ave and N. Montana and the interstate.

We will be knocking on doors to make sure residence have working smoke alarms. If they don’t have an alarm, the department will be able to install a new alarm for their protection. If their alarm needs a new battery, we also have batteries!

Thank you to the business that did not want any recognition which will allow us to have this two day event. The department will continue these canvases to make a safer Helena.

🚨🏠 Helena Fire Department firefighters are coming to the neighborhood!

In honor of Fire Prevention Month, Helena firefighters will visit neighborhoods during the first two Saturdays in October to voluntarily check and test smoke alarms, replace batteries and non-functioning alarms, install alarms where needed, and share basic fire- and life-safety information.

This is a voluntary community assistance program—not a code-enforcement inspection. Firefighters will only enter homes with the resident’s permission.

While they’re there, take a few minutes to make sure:

✅ Smoke alarms are tested regularly
✅ Everyone knows two ways out of each room when possible
✅ Household members know what to do and where to go if an alarm sounds

“Prevention is a partnership,” said Fire Chief Corey Parker. “Every alarm we test, every battery we replace, and every resident we educate is an opportunity to reduce risk.”
