☎️ Hidden Heroes of HPD: Dispatchers

When someone calls 911, our dispatchers are often the very first voice they hear during one of the most stressful moments of their lives.

Working behind the scenes, dispatchers gather critical information, coordinate emergency responses, and provide support to callers until help arrives. At the same time, they manage radio traffic and ensure officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel have the information they need to respond safely and effectively.

Their ability to remain calm under pressure, juggle multiple tasks, and make quick decisions is essential to public safety. While they may not be seen on scene, dispatchers are a critical link in every emergency response and play a vital role in serving our community.

Today, we're proud to recognize our Dispatchers as HPD Hidden Heroes.

💙 Thank you for your professionalism, dedication, and commitment to helping our community every day.

🚨 Helena’s Annual Deer Count Has Begun! 🦌

Over the next two weeks, Animal Control Officers will be conducting Helena’s annual deer count during the late evening and overnight hours:

📅 This week: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
📅 Next week: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday

Officers will be out spotlighting and counting deer from clearly marked Animal Control vehicles. They will make every effort to minimize light intrusion and avoid shining lights into homes whenever possible.

This annual survey provides valuable data that helps guide the management of Helena’s urban deer population and supports informed wildlife management decisions throughout the city.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as this important work is completed! 🦌🌙

Our Civil Disobedience Team recently enjoyed some training and nice weather. As a part of their training, the team was exposed to various chemical mu*****ns, which included a friendly game of Cowboy Poker (tear gas edition). Who said grown men don't cry?

🚗 Theft Prevention Reminder 🚗

While most theft offenses reported in our area involve shoplifting, we also continue to see incidents of thefts from motor vehicle, commonly known as "car hopping." These crimes often occur when offenders check parked vehicles for unlocked doors and take any valuables left inside.

You can help protect yourself by:
✅ Locking your vehicle every time you leave it
✅ Removing valuables from plain sight
✅ Taking keys, wallets, purses, and fi****ms with you
✅ Parking in well-lit areas whenever possible
✅ Reporting suspicious activity immediately

Many vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity. Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim.

If you see suspicious persons checking vehicle doors or acting suspiciously in your neighborhood, please call law enforcement right away.

Lock it. Take your valuables. Help stop crime before it starts.

📞 Did You Know?

There is a national standard that recommends 90% of all 911 calls be answered within 15 seconds.

In September 2026, our 911 Center processed 1,980 emergency calls. Of those, 1,961 calls were answered in less than 12 seconds, demonstrating our team's commitment to providing fast, accurate and reliable service to our community.

When major incidents occur, such as traffic accidents, large public events, or controlled burns that produce highly visible smoke, we often receive multiple 911 calls reporting the same event. Every call must still be answered and properly triaged to determine whether the caller is reporting a new incident, has additional information, or is directly involved.

Despite these periods of high call volume, only 16 calls exceeded the 15-second benchmark, representing less than 1% of all 911 calls received during the month.

Our 911 Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, with a minimum of two Public Safety Telecommunicators (911 Dispatchers) on duty at all times.

👏 Thank you to our dedicated Public Safety Telecommunicators for their professionalism, hard work, and commitment to serving our community every day.
